Former Patriot David Andrews Believes Lomu Will Push Campbell For Starting Role

Ben Woolidge, Last year's undrafted free agent QB who stands 6'2" (215 pounds) with 32 5/8" arms and a 78 3/4" wingspan.

Will Campbell, our LT taken #4, stands 6'5 7/8" (319 pounds), 32 5/8" arms, and a 77 3/8" wingspan.

So guys with the exact same arm length our big LT, 100 pounds heavier, has over an inch shorter wingspan. Unbelievable.

This is a problem.

Should we cut him then?

Hey @patfanken - You might want to edit your post since it seems to have doubled up on Wozzy's and hidden your response inside the quote.

Per usual, you have no clue WTF you are talking about, State.

"Will Campbell fans" what does that mean. Do you mean Patriot fans hoping that Campbells play was injury related. Yes I plead guilty. Most want what is best for the team. Some just want to be right either way. I do not dismiss the idea that if he struggles again this year that he will not be the left tackle going forward despite what the Pats have said. They have to say that. I like Lomu a lot. You do not have to look very hard to see a future where he is the left tackle and Campbell is the right tackle or a guard. If that makes the Pats a better team I think most would be fine with that even ones like me who want Campbell to succeed at LT. If Campbell comes out and balls he will likely stay at LT. Let's see how it plays out but the haters taking a victory lap may or may not be premature. He was much better in the regular season than the playoffs. I am hoping it is injury related. It may not be, we shall find out. But these declarative statements either way need to wait.

By " Will Campbell fans" triumph is referring to Patriot fans. Like Sam, the Captain, and numerous others triumph was rooting for Campbell to fail, and looked like the complete moron he is when that didn't happen. However they did end up happy in the end, when the Patriots lost in the Super Bowl, which gave them newfound hope that the Patriots would go back to sucking.

I don't think you have enough info on Campbell to mark the pick a bust or even a disappointment beyond a one-year disappointment.

That said, he didn't burst onto the scene, stay healthy, and make it impossible to imagine swapping him for the "next man up." He's supposed to hear footsteps right now. A (pre-pro) career left tackle is breathing down his neck, and yes, Lomu's physical measurables, all else being equal, favor him over Campbell. A big push in camp could win Lomu the start; either way we go into this season two deep at (we hope better) LT.

Honestly, we needed/need so much help on the O-Line, the extra horse is absolutely a good thing, regardless of who is the better of the two.

I continue to think/hope that Campbell, with a year at pro speed, with two legs, with the double-length season in mind & muscle memory, with another year in the gym, and so on, will take a big step forward.

A continuation of his late season play can't stand as the standard we hope to set... that said, we don't know whether we've just seen his ceiling. It's an uncomfortable moment.

But it's nice that we'll have the luxury of a college-level pure-bred LT ready to grab the position away. We'll see who wins the position battle, but given what we know/don't know, the battle's definitely on. If Campbell is losing battles that Lomu is winning, of course Lomu can get a shot at LT against the 1s.... potentially becoming the starting LT. Then they've both got at least 2 years to protect against the other by excelling on the line (and playing whichever position they land.) And since they're O Linemen not headcase wide receivers, the healthy competition is only good for the team.

Once again, procrastination consumes my morning... Damn I wish we were reading dispatches from training camp (or at least post-trade-deadline WR news.) Whatever happened to cornhole? Did people sudddenly stop throwing bean bags at wooden boxes with holes in them?

It means people who insist that Campbell stay at LT despite his draft report and his struggles.

Prior to Campbell getting hurt in the Bengals game we saw NONE of this BS talk.. he chose to play compromised post injury and it's given all the haters even some on patsfans.com a reason to say see I told ya! .. Campbell will be fine! Ask his coach...

Vrabel isnt going add gas to the fire.

You dont draft a LT round 1 if Campbells job is safe.

They are not rooting for Campbell to fail. You might feel that anxiety, but they are Pats fans and are expressing their opinion.

You supported Chism III to the end of the earth, but he did not work out yet. The final outcome with Campbell is still unfolding as well. Be patient as these players learn and develop.

I agree. In fact, he was overhyped prior to injury. While it was encouraging he was "grading well", I saw a lot of shaky play from him and others being covered up by Maye.

Even if Campbell turned out to be a elite last season, the Pats were drafting a T in round 1 because Moses is old and should be replaced. However, the caveat here is that they drafted a guy who's only played LT in college. That's why Campbell's job is being brought up by the media.

This talk wouldn't have come up had the Pats shut Campbell down for the playoffs. Even if they would've shut him down after the Houston game (where they absolutely should've pulled the plug), the narrative would've been different.

I still think Campbell would be a better RT than LT and there is zilch wrong with that. No problem being drafted where he went. LG on the other hand makes no sense especially with our shiny new LG.
