Hopkins comments on trade with Patriots or Bills

Buffalo has the additional problem of Diggs being upset that he’s not getting the ball enough, and adding Hopkins will only hurt his feelings even more.

Also, if they did something silly like sign Hopkins to trade Diggs, they'd free up some money this year, but they'd take a 31.1M cap hit next year.

If your core players play well and if you draft well you can always work around the salary cap. The Saints did it for years with Brees

yea drafting is key, but the Saints only won 1 SB and had a lot of years where they missed the playoffs outright.. and once Brees retired, that entire roster collapsed from all of their cap management strategy, it took 2-3 years for them to reset everything and start over

Good to know, thanks.

It’s comical to watch those knocking this, they want so desperately for the Patriots to fail that adding a really good player would damage their hopes of failure. They really want the Patriots to lose, simply so they can claim they were right. Truly pathetic.

Adam Schefter lists the following likely destinations for DeAndre Hopkins on his podcast:

Buffalo
Cleveland
Kansas City
New England

Agreed, but they are still not healthy cap wise. They are at or towards the bottom in cap for the next 3 years, and they have one of the Carr brothers as their QB. They won't contend anytime soon.

Diggs has been invisible in the Bills post season losses. Slightly over 100 receiving yards and 0 TDs in those 3 losses.

Adding Hopkins gives defenses someone else to worry about and takes the heat off Diggs. Yeah, Diggs would likely be upset to finally beat KC and play in a Super Bowl.

The Bills have no cap space this year and -$14M in cap space for 2024. They still will use -$5M to -$10M more this year which has to be spread to future years. The Bills lost Edmunds, probably their best defender, in FA this year. I expect the Bills could play cap games to sign Hopkins, but they would be in cap hell and lose more players to FA next year. They need to sign defenders and not lose them, so I doubt they sign Hopkins.
To sign Hopkins all the Bills need to do is extend high salary guys like Ed Oliver.

That is all the Bills had to do to sign Edmunds. Edmunds is a Bear.

Sometimes a team will look short-term, sometimes a team looks long-term. Right now the Bills are not making short-term salary cap decisions based on their last major decision.

Teams are doing to Diggs/Bills what defenses would do to the Michael Thomas/Saints. When defenses took those players out, it exposed how poor the supporting cast was.

How many times did we see the Saints offenses during the playoff loses throw their arms in the air of confusion after so many drives stalled?

Hopkins would be a nice try for the Bills, but they are weak at every level of the defense. They need Miller to stay healthy this year.

The Bills desperately need another WR. They know it and the NFL knows it.

I think the Bills will make a bigger push for Hopkins than KC because 1) their receiving corps after Diggs is somewhat thin and 2) they are desperate to win an SB.

Perhaps Gonzalez is the guy who can take out Diggs vs the Pats.

Another reason to sign Hopkins.

What is concerning is how long he's lingering on the market. That's not a very good sign. Nobody wanted to trade for him earlier and now he's just hanging out as a FA.

Good players have immediate suitors.

He was just released officially yesterday.

Immediate suitors, but not immediate deals.

the least BB could do is drive the price sky high for the Bills

Where’s Parcells with a poison pill contract when you Need one.

A additional 2 million dollars for every game played in the state of NY if exceeds 6 games a bonus of 50 million will be paid.

If your core players play well and if you draft well you can always work around the salary cap. The Saints did it for years with Brees
For two years after Brees retired the biggest cap hit on the entire team was the dead cap hit owed to Brees. The team itself started the offseason dead last in available cap space before they reworked every young player on their roster and extended most.

They couldn’t afford a QB, so they did what the Pats did in 2020 and signed Jameis Winston, a QB nobody wanted for cheap.

They finally cleared some space and signed Carr this season, but suggesting there were no ramifications of “going all in” at the end of Brees or that they didn’t take a down year afterwards is not accurate. Also they won zero rings at the end of Bree’s run.

The cap has to be contended with, it’s especially difficult when you have one of the highest paid QB’s in the league.

For three years in a row Brees led the entire league in passing (2014-2016) but their defenses were ranked near dead last… they won 7 games, 7 games and 7 games. Not sure how well they were working around the cap at that point… despite having a top 3 QB in the NFL.
