The Patriots signed a 'trick-shot' kicker who can kick an 80-yard field goal

If his kicks are worth more than 3 points, then I'll be impressed.

He was something like 6-for-16 in kicking FGs in the indoor league. Having a strong leg does not make you an NFL kicker.

Ahahaha! It's the next wave of thinking outside the box by BB. Who needs an offense?! Get a touch back on every kickoff then trot this guy out. Easy 3 points! I guess we know now how he's going to replace that bum Brady!

I agree. However, having such a player on the 53 for the playoffs might be a reasonable use of a roster spot. I can think of situations at the end of the half and game where he might be useful. If you are thinking about the value of a roster spot, consider putting Cowart on IR.

Sounds like he can push the ball further downfield than this offense can

Reading this post made me recall that Red Rider song, “Lunatic Fringe.”

I thought they might be able to use him for onside kicks. Maybe he can get the ball to bounce a certain way more consistently. Not worth burning a roster spot solely for that though.

(Unless he can make it so we recover onside kicks 80% of the time, which would probably be the most potent weapon an NFL team could have!)

Imagine the ****storm among the rest of the NFL if the Patriots figured out how to do this. It would be delicious.

Not bad! Foxboro in January, though... he’s gonna want a shirt.

But if you miss an 80 yarder you give the ball to the other team on your 30

In an outdoor stadium if he can kick 10 yards but really high, it could give our team to rush to where it will come down. Like a really high vollyball serve

This is a bit misleading. Arena football has goalposts that have higher crossbars and are half the width of NFL goalposts, and field goals are also punts (and it behooves you to try to kick the ball off the net). Generally speaking, teams only kick field goals that aren't de facto punts (because they're 40+ yard kicks at a tiny goalpost) at the very end of a half. You can't really tell much from those stats.

It looks like his IFL team had another kicker, so I actually even suspect his purpose as a trick kicker in the IFL was to aim at the crossbar/upright. Field goals are hard to hit bevause of how tall and narrow the posts are, but are live balls if they hit the uprights or crossbar, so one thing you'll see is kickers actively trying to bank field goals and kickoffs off them as a sort of onside kick. Which makes those field goal stats even less interesting.

BB is on the rules committee, but I can't for the life of me figure out how he's going to get the "best 2 out of 3" rule passed.
