We're onto Buffalo....

My main concern: if Jaylen Samuels gashed the Pats D for 142 yards, how many yards will Shady McCoy get? If McCoy has a +200 yard game ...

McCoy was OUT last week (v. DET) with a hammy, and was limited in practice yesterday. He's rushed for 479 yards on the season, and only once this season for over 100 (113 in wk-11 v. the JETE). He's averaging 3.3 ypa and has 2 TDs rushing.

Ivory was also OUT last week (shoulder), and was also limited in practice yesterday. He's rushed for 340 yards on a 3.4 ypa with 1 rushing TD.

Josh Allen has 506 rushing yards in 10 games including TWO games with 100+ yards. He has a 6.7 ypa and 6 rushing TDs.

OTOH, Allen has completed only 52% of his 253 pass attempts, with a 6.5yds/att average, and he's thrown for 6 TDs and 9 INTs. He's also been sacked on nearly 10% of his dropbacks.

The past two games, the Pats have been playing in dime packages an unusually high percentage of the time, while requiring a "Front Five" to handle the run. Given the information above, I suspect the Pats will deploy a significantly different strategy against the Bills.

According the Jeff Howe, Gronk has allowed 0 sacks, and 1 pressure, but been flagged for holding twice.
Hmm.

Of the 724 snaps, hes blocked 379 times. Since the inverse is 345 routes and top has thrown 516 times and Gronk has missed 3 games, I'm willing to bet the number of times hes actually pass blocked is around 60 times. Small sample size.

Wish the run block success metric was easy to find!

I can understand going dime against Minnesota and Pittsburgh, but Miami?

People will laugh, but I don’t give a damn. I’ve been saying this for weeks now. We need Shelton to come back motivated & play at a high level. Let’s be pragmatic. A few reasons:

1) Depth - We simply don’t have many options at the position, and NOBODY with his size. Yes, HE HAS SUCKED BALLS ALL YEAR. No denying that. I get it. However, he’s still 6’2 345lbs of man. A space eater, which is ESSENTIAL to BB’s DEF. He is what he is. A healthy rotation of run stoppers are crucial in the playoffs. To be frank, Brown has been as bad or worse than Shelton. Look at the film.

2) Simple Math- The Patriots have allowed more yards per carry since Week 13 — an astounding 7.64 — than in any three-game stretch since the franchise’s inception in 1960. That mark also is the fourth-worst by any NFL team since the merger. Horrific. It was bad enough when Shelton did play, but this is just flat out debilitating. On a “brighter note” NE has only allowed 7 rushing TDs all year; second only to CHI (5). With Shelton, NE “only” surrendered 4.03 YPR; which is right around league average. Ask yourself; do we want to give up 8 YPR or 4YPR??? You do the math....

3) Motivation- Not sure when/if Shelton will get out of BB’s doghouse, but he’s got to be motivated ala Branch in 2016. Whether it be gameplan, lack of being in football shape, execution etc, I’m sure he is itching to get back out on the field & contribute. I know he hasn’t played well at all, but he’s still a NEP. I’d like to see him execute, play at a high level and help the team win. Dominating wouldn’t be so bad either

Again, Shelton alone isn’t the entire answer, but he helps in regards to interior run defense. Outside zone runs & sweeps are a different beast. We’ll just have to rely on scheme, execution and leverage at that point. Wonder if Obi is ahead of the curve (or at least on track) to help cover some of those sweeps and outside runs that we struggle to cover. His speed would certainly help, but only if he knows what he’s supposed to be doing on the field.

Nice link! Thanks!

I wonder how (or if) chips on the DE before running a pass route are counted as pass blocks. Well-executed chips certainly make a difference, and Gronk has often been a devastating chipper in the past.

May have been more out of disrespect for Miami's ground game than out of respect for Tannehill's passing. Either way, it didn't work well.

It did work fairly well against the Steelers, though. Had the Pats' offense been up to the task, Samuels' "lifetime achievement" running the ball wouldn't have mattered.

Totally agree.

Maybe we can get one of BBs quality control guys hammered and they can tell us.

Blocking is still very good, if not elite.

I am huge fan of Kelce funny Patsfans always rated him as Beef up WR. Don't even get me stated on Kittle as reagards to the Patriots. How some of these directors of Scouting still have jobs is unreal. Kittle in College was an excellent Blocker that aspect stood out and he caught it when they threw it to him. So him being highly graded in that area is no surprise to me wish we had Drafted him.
