I think you'll be surprised by Osweiler. I think he can be a Joe Flacco level quarterback but, perhaps not as clutch (gotta give Flacco some daps, he's a great postseason QB).

I don't think he is bad, he filled in well for the Broncos and was a big part on their SB run, but he's too unproven, he was playing in a system that doesn't require a QB carrying the team in the shoulders and with a top defense to give some support. Nothing against the guy, actually he gave a big middle finger to the Broncos, but I hate when GM's screw up the market like this so I'm actually rooting to the Texans front office to fail miserably.

I get what you're saying but this makes all kinds of sense for Houston as opposed to going back to the Hoyer well or picking up a rookie. They went 9-7 with a pretty good defense but an offense of Hopkins and not much else. Osweiler is highly cuttable after year 2 of this deal (if he sucks) with only $6m in dead money at that point.

I don't think you can blame the Texans or the GM for using the market sign a player they want (and even minimizing risk in the back end of said player's contract). Whether or not the NFL cap system is showing some cracks as the cap takes these sharper spikes that can quickly undervalue previous deals and/or teams are getting generally better across the board at manipulating it is a different discussion. Two problems I see:
1) The sort of random big jumps in the yearly cap number lead to some funny money contracts that rarely get fully paid out, might make more sense for both sides to agree to it going up $6m per year instead of $1m in year one and $11m in year too (same net result, less volatility).
2) Additionally as the total cap money gets higher it's a little easier for teams to play with the "base salary" amounts in these deals. Obviously the Patriots have always done this with some success also, but if looking for a way to prevent teams from getting out of these irresponsible deals (or force them into making more responsible ones) I think that'd be a spot to look.

Point being for Osweiler worst case scenario for Houston is they are likely no worse off at QB than they would have otherwise been for the next two years, at which point they will either be able to get out of the contract if he sucks or it if he is good then $18m AAV might be below the mean for a starting QB. Seems like a totally reasonable risk for a team without an answer at QB.

I would but, ultimately I think Denver was still a much better position if the contract situation was close.

He's a back up who certainly earned his ring.

If Osweiler had started all season and Manning only took the final kneel down in the superbowl, the media headlines all would've been "Manning wins world championship."

All of your observations are good.

I was surprised in February that Elway didn't give Osweiler more public props for his contributions to the Broncos' run last year...I mean we can bellyache all we want about the fumbled punt and a couple of bad calls, but the bottom line for Denver is that Osweiler was the QB for the team's definitive Regular Season victory, without which Peyton would have had to play his [final] game in what I recall was a very cold Foxboro that day.

So, that suggests to me that there were "issues" between Osweiler and the organization...and maybe the locker room?...that never made it into the media.
