How the New England Patriots can create cap space for the 2015 season

Good article, but IMHO it would be a jackass move on the part of the Patriots to waive Dennard if there's any chance of getting anything in a trade for him, even if it's as little as a 2016 7; it reduces the likelihood he'll get the $1.5M that IMHO he more than earned in 2012 and 2013.

17. Release Michael Hoomanawanui for a net cap savings of $890,000 -

Please let this happen. Time to move on.

With all due respect, many of your suggestions are not "creating" cap space in 2015 but rather pushing off the cap hit to later years impacting the cap space in those years. The only true way to "create" cap space is to cut player compensation or to cut or trade the player. IMO, if we truly wish to create cap space in 2015 without affecting our ability to sign players in later years, then we have to cut some players and/or player compensation. To me, there are some prime candidates:

1.) Revis- Obviously we can't pay him $20M so its a matter of figuring out what the market will pay and if we see that figure as a value.
2.) Wilfork - 34 year old (next season) is not worth anywhere close to the amount he is contracted. IMO, he needs to take a substantial cut or be cut.
3.) Mayo- That contract needs to be renegotiated.
4.) Solder- Left Tackles don't come cheap but I'm not sure he has played up to his $7 M number
5.) Hooman- just not worth the money
6.) Dennard- I can't see how the organization can pay their 6th CB $1.5M. I think some other team might see value in Dennard although I can't see use getting more than a late round pick for a guy who's under contract for one more year and is on probation.

Obviously this is something you understand but I thought the word "create" didn't accurately reflect all the ways you've suggested to gain more cap space in 2015.

The fact that you did not provide a suggestion tells me that "create" was my best option as a headline writer[emoji6]. Will update blog with a note that some suggestions may increase player's future cap numbers.

Blog updated

Question.

Let's say, in some unexpected turn of events, the Patriots KEEP Revis at exactly the numbers they agreed to for 2015. What would be the likely impact in terms of other players kept/sent packing in that (highly improbable) scenario ?

Question:

I noticed that you have Develin listed on the 2015 page. Yet, looking back at the 2014 page, he's a free agent. Is this because he's a restricted free agent?

Actually I was thinking of the word "gain" for any increase in cap space and then "create" for cap space gained through player cuts or compensation cuts and the word "transfer" for cap space gained in one year by pushing the cap into another year.

Just some suggestions lol

Develin will be an ERFA after this season. It seemed safe to presume that he and the other ERFAs will be tendered.

If Revis starts on the 2015 League Year with a 25 million cap figure, expect that Wilfork has been released

That was a sobering conclusion, Miguel. Thank you.
