During the leadup to the Patriots’ Week 15 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, linebackers coach Jerod Mayo gave an unprompted shoutout to the leader of New England’s front seven.

Not Matthew Judon, the Patriots’ Pro Bowl pass rusher and defensive MVP.

Ja’Whaun Bentley, the rugged inside linebacker and team co-captain who, with little fanfare or media attention, is putting together the best season of his five-year NFL career.

“Bentley is probably one of the most underrated linebackers in the league,” Mayo said. “I’m not sure why he doesn’t get much publicity, but he’s one of the best ‘backers in the league.”

Patriots fans might balk at that review. Bentley has been a solid Patriots contributor for years, sure. But one of the best linebackers in the NFL? Really?

Yes, really. At least according to the evaluators at Pro Football Focus. Bentley enters Week 17 as PFF’s eighth-highest-graded linebacker. His run defense grade ranks 10th among qualified ‘backers. His coverage grade ranks 17th.

Can this be the Pats 1st win against a >.500 team?

Even if the Pats win, they still won't have done it because the Dolphins will be 8-8. Looks like they will have to beat the Bills to accomplish this feat. Although if the Jets, Lions and/or the Steelers win their last two games then they would qualify as a winning team. Also, if Miami beats the Jets after we take care of them this Sunday they would qualify, and the Jets would be out. According to the info I see, it is possible for the Pats to finish the year with 4 wins against teams with winning records. They would be either 4-5 or 4-4 depending on the Miami factor. This would make them have one of the top win totals against winning teams. Which basically makes me reconsider the value of this stat.

Which 4? I see Lions, Steelers, and Jets or MIA, not both.

Better hope Mills is a full go against Miami’s WR’s. Even with Bridgewater at QB, this could turn into a serious issue on Sunday.

What happened to Marcus?

Of the 5 questionable, the only one we could spare is Thornton. He hasn't done much and we should be fine w/ Meyers, Bourne, Agholor. Rham only if Damien is 100%. We need Henry (only TE?), Mills and Jones.

Scotty Washington (the guy who deflected a TD pass to Jakobi) is the other TE.

Does this mean Myles Bryant is returning kicks.

I’d love to see Thornton or Pierre Strong return kicks. Both those guys have break away speed Bryant isn’t that fast.

Was Bryant returning kicks before they gave Marcus the return job early in the season? I can’t remember for sure.
