Why are we signing multiple TE's and Safeties? We need heft in DL and a guy they valued was cut in about 2 days.

The Pats have 2 DL on the PS. They have 1 TE on the PS. They have 2 safeties on the PS.

Gotta figure for STs depth for the Safeties and TE.

Eric Gregory is your "heft" on the D-line for back-up in case of injury.

Clearly, Hunt didn't show enough in the 2 days of practice to warrant staying.

The biggest change in the depth at ILB. They are carrying 6ILB on the Pro-roster and 2 additional on the PS. That's 2 additional they didn't carry last year.

I get what you are saying Manx, but I think that with many of them they see traits that are exceptional and are trying to shore up their weaknesses so they can later use their strengths. Edelman wasn't a practice squad guy, but he spent three years on the bubble before breaking out. He was the prototype of a guy with an exceptional trait, his short area quickness, who needed to develop the rest of his game to turn into the player he became. They didn't dare put him on PS because they knew that he would get picked up instead of ever getting there.

I'd like to know what % of people placed on the PS in their first year make it in the NFL. There will be exceptions for the reasons you state but I would maintain they are the exceptions rather than the rule and by a significant margin. My statement was a bit of a blunt one and maybe 'replacement level' is more accurate than JAG.

I don't disagree that the vast majority of UDFA's don't make it in the NFL, the tact of the matter is that the vast majority of draft picks don't even make it in the NFL. My only point was that many of the end of roster guys and PS guys get to stick around because of specific strengths teams see in them. Their hope is that they can shore up their weaknesses and turn them into productive players, even if most won't get their.

I told people here a week or so ago at cutdown time not to read too much into every backend of the roster or practice squad signing. The team is rapid fire bringing guys in to kick the tires and see what is out there.
