The Athletic report on Vrabel/Russini

The story is now done. I never got the people who thought that Vrabel should step down because this story would be too much of a distraction for the team. I always knew this story would go away. This report pretty much puts a stake in the heart of all the conspiracies.

Because most of the posters on here are 110 years old and don't want the kids to have any fun, like have sexual affairs with young relatively hot women.

Poor Tony Farmer... it's been a tough 24 hours for him. All his content went away.

I gave up on that moral **** measuring contest of a thread fairly early but I can't imagine once I left everyone in that thread was suddenly arguing Vrabel did anything but step on his crank the way he responded when the story broke. That wasn't what ran that abomination to 1288 posts (haven't looked, I'm taking that count from the post above, I'm also sure without looking the displays of intolerance reached the point where it was closed). I'm fairly confident after the first few hundred posts it was the usual suspects going at it with ginned up holier than thou moral outrage vs corresponding proclamations of the superiority of those professing their open mindedness, I'm sure it didn't take long for religion to come into it either.

Your characterizations aren't too far off the mark, yet I will say again Mike's own positioning of the story gave the story much more staying power than it would have had otherwise. If he just came out and said it's a personal matter right up front instead of egging on the media with the "laughable" and "completely innocent" lines, the story would have had far less oxygen and would have died a lot sooner. It took him two whole weeks to change his tune once the additional photos were found.

And in addition to the moral angle and Mike's terrible handling of the situation, there was the journalistic integrity angle. I won't re-litigate them but am just saying they were several elements of the story.

It could be far worse, IMO. In a lot of cases such "fallen women" write tell-all books, and such a book IMO would be tremendously damaging. One case that comes to mind is Stormy Daniels, who not just took bribes that led the current POTUS to be convicted on 34 felony counts, but then wrote such a book. Vrabel is getting off (ahem) easy, at least for now.

Vrabel also isn't an utter piece of ****, so there are lots of differences here -- maybe not a great comparison if we want to have a rational discussion here.

I'd say that Vrabel's high standing in the public eye is part of what made his U-turn from "completely innocent" to "did not meet personal standards" even more of a thing. To his credit he is being given a pass by those closest to him both at work and at home, which speaks well for his character. Heck, by keeping quiet even Russini is giving him a pass.
