FB’s can be replaced by other positions in spots. Elandon Robert’s in the past, Tonga last year. But Josh insists upon the FB position.

The presence of a fullback makes run fakes more credible, pulling linebackers toward the line of scrimmage and opening voids in the intermediate passing game. This allows receivers to find open space between the numbers, a hallmark of Earnhardt-Perkins' route concepts.

He wasn’t good using two TE sets and having a TE come inside and play FB or even relying on wham blocks from TE’s in motion. This is why Jonnu Smith was misused here. Hopefully Drake has worked on his checkdown game, Josh stresses it and Gilliam gets incorporated in the passing attack.

I think Josh is pretty old fashioned and in danger of the league passing him by. He needs a superior QB mind on the field to run his old fashioned predictable offense and make it look good. It would beholve him to spread the ball around and use everyone… stop being so predictable. He should watch some old Charlie Weis film. Some old school concepts never get old and are timeless.

True, but my operative word was ROSTERED.
FB, A position he openly told the media that he had to learn on the fly as he not played it, but he took one for the team cause Vrable /Mcdaniels asked him to. Count him as EMERGENCY FB if you like. He is rostered-intended as a TE and may not make 53 as that if he doesn’t have ST value, other versatility, or injury bug bites.

I don’t see him making the 53 barring total injury calamity, but he could stick to the practice squad and give them some depth at both positions if he shows versatility.

if a team wants to operate an offense that utilizes a FB some of the time, another positional player cannot do that
Westover who was a rookie learning the position, got 237 snaps
Tonga got 14 snaps
presenting Tonga (or Roberts) as a position player that can replace a FB is not true.

TE’s do it all the time in two TE offenses that don’t roster a TE. Patrick Ricard is a DT who plays FB more than defense, Harbaugh uses him as a three phase player… but he’s a fulltime FB when not playing defense or special teams. The Patriots have used numerous other positions at FB over the years.

Maybe you should re-read my post and see that I was responding to YOUR post that was in response to Wozzy.

YOU made the statement that Westover was on the Roster, but listed as a TE. You made the response to Wozzy's statement about Westover still being on the 90-man and still giving the Pats depth behind Gilliam. My response to you was to point out that Westover spent the entirety of 2025 playing FB but was listed at TE. Meaning that where he was listed doesn't make a difference.

At no point in my response to you was I implying anything about Westover's playing abilities. That was an assumption YOU made with nothing to support it.

People had high hopes for him because, contrary to your blathering, Lampe was considered either the #1 or #2 FB last year. Not because of McDaniels' want for a FB.

You take swipes at where Lampe played while completely ignoring where FBs like Jusczyck (Harvard), Gilliam (Toledo), Kuhn (Shippensburg), Tolbert (Coastal Carolina), Vonta Leach (East Carolina) played. So this idea that a FB has to go to a School that's in the SEC or Big 10, doesn't fly to be effective is just laughable.


Let's look at Some of Lampe's numbers:
Bench - 22
Vertical - 34
Broad - 9'04
Shuttle - 4.4
3-Cone - 7.43

I would have compared Lampe to Kuhn and Tolbert, but neither had actual Pro-Day stats for me to pull up. I didn't compare him to Picard or Juszczyk because they are unicorns at the FB position.

So, Lampe's numbers are the same or better than Leach. So, that kinds destroys this idea that he wasn't strong, agile, mobile, expolsive or that the level of competition makes a difference.


The reality is that we don't know why Lampe was cut. YOU pretending like you do or have some special insight is just laughable.

Robbie Ouzts, selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 5th round (175th overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft, was the lone standout rookie fullback. The former Alabama player appeared in 12 games with 2 starts during his rookie campaign.

Lampe was an undrafted guy from the Northern Illinois Huskies of the Mid-America Conference who got injured in the first padded practice. He was a no risk tryout at a position that much of the league ignores. Funny story though…

If I said it was only his small school pedigree that was the problem, then I would have been wrong. But I also mentioned his lack of athleticism and strength, pair those two together.

Not really, James Develin wasn’t a great athlete either, but he did bench it 39 times at his pro day. That is why Develin at 6'3" 255 pounds could wham block a DT who outweighs him by 70 pounds. Not because of good vibes.

FB’s in the league are few and far between, and if by unicorns you mean the population is dwindling, then I guess that’s true. Kyle Juszczyk was a great athlete exiting Harvard, Ricard is a 300 pound DT and willing blocker. They have traits… Lampe not so much.

Not it doesn’t, Westover played last year, a better athlete than Lampe but still not great. and Westover wasn’t good. Just playing doesn’t make you good. There’s a lot of jags playing in the NFL, especially on bad teams, but even on some good ones.

I never claimed to, which is why I usually start sentences with phrases like “I guess, I assume,” or “it’s my opinion.”

We don’t know if a healthy Lampe wouldn’t have gotten canned last preseason either, or played as poorly as Westover, or worse.

You guys had him in the binkie HOF. So now you’re salty… I get it.

Didn’t have a real backup when Develin went down in 2015. Had Johnson promoted in 2019, but not sure how much of that was a happy surprise considering how he entered the league vs. being deliberate with the position depth.

All I know is will always enjoy a FB thread.
