Bedard: Team thinks Maye has made a huge leap forward this offseason.

According to Vrabel Maye follows the play and checkdowns as they are called, and he said this repeatedly last season. So if people have an issue with the checkdowns it's with MacDaniels.
You really think a checkdown is a product of Josh McDaniels? Disagree. Every play that's designed has a checkdown. My point is that Drake does not want to take the check down. He's always looking to make a play down the field. That is not a Josh McDaniels thing. If it was, when did Tom Brady have the same issue? Tom was the best at getting the ball out of his hands quickly. And can we stop quoting what coaches say? There is such a thing called coach speak for a reason. To use that as some kind of justification that he's checking the ball down efficiently is quite the leap. Have you watched Drake play at all in college? I would imagine the answer is no because he was exactly the same way in college. This is not a Josh McDaniels issue. This is a Drake Maye issue. I love Drake. He's a great quarterback, but it's okay to say that he needs to get the ball of his hands a little quicker when the pocket is collapsing. There's a reason why sacks are often considered a quarterback stat.

He is, but he's only taking shots more than 10 yards past the sticks about 10 times a game.

I disagree , and yes, I'm going with what Vrabel has said repeatedly about it,

I'd like to see a better short passing offense.
I don't want him to stop chucking it, because he's phenomenal, but the field is much bigger when doing both IMO
Exactly!

Having a good short passing game does not mean abandoning the long ball.

I think Maye’s completion stats are a little misleading. He has a high completion percentage so at first glance it seems that means trying to throw the ball downfield is highly effective. But I haven’t seen any analysis of what the percentage is if you include plays when he wanted to throw deep and never got to throw at all because he was sacked or scrambling. Those are the plays that would benefit from a better short passing game.

Last year's offense looked very good on paper but if you dig into it a little bit I think a big part was how often they converted 3rd and long. Just off memory and feel it was way more often then normal or what should be expected. I felt more comfortable with 3rd and 10 then 3rd and 3. At least one of Diggs, Boutte, Henry, or Hollins was likely to be open on a 12 yard route and give Maye two shots at that he's completing one of them. A better short game doesn't put them in those gotta have it moments as often which is more sustainable

Good point. Maye is an excellent down field passer, but as you noted, it takes more time, so you have to have outlets and the QB needs to recognize that. Easy for me to say, but Maye needs to improve that recognition.

If this is true (and not just Vrabel bsing) then they need to design better plays. This wasn’t a subtle shortcoming of the offense last year. It was exploited by all the good defenses.

Maye needs a solid checkdown game. When we are first and goal we should not suddenly lose confidence in the offense.

It’s like a bball team that can’t make free throws.

Hopefully an improved power run game will help a lot and open things up for Maye that close. Going 0 for 7 near the goal line in Cincinnati last season wasn't ideal....

McD and Co should be watching that series at least once a week this offseason

Maye first needs a solid Slot Receiver from among the various candidates here. If Jaylin Noel had been drafted instead of Kyle Williams, maybe we'd already have him... Or perhaps Eli Heidenreich instead of the LB... Or at the very, Very least, Deion Burks instead of the ****ing woman-beater (allegedly)...

Curious what changed between early February and mid May. Only three months. Did Drake really deepen his understanding of the offense that much more during his time off? Did he develop his own skillset somehow?
Exactly my first thought. If this story dropped late August it would be at least somewhat believable. This just seems like pure offseason fluff.

We... well some of us myself included thought that guy to be pop.. now alls not lost he still could very well be that. But definitely agree cap the slot WR is vital here.. with AJ now everyone can play to thier skill sets and not have to over do it.. it creates favorable match ups for everyone..

If Drake throws a significant amount of interceptions in camp, don’t fret; it’s not a sign of regression…just a pleasant reminder that we now have an All-Pro safety back there doing work. Damn, that felt good to say…
