Teams are already calling about a trade for him. Pats pass rush is still quite putrid, but the Pats can't trade for both Keith Sweat's son and AJ Brown.

Sometimes it’s “if I have to play here on this bottom of the barrel team, I want more money - but if I can play on a better team then I’m good”. Not sure if that’s his situation though. It’s not great to have just gotten paid last year and have personally chosen Arizona in free agency just to be unhappy the following year.

He wanted the contract, he just didn’t want the team. So how do you get the best of both worlds? Sign the contract then become a distraction and push your way out of town. Arizona will pay most of the upfront money so the rest of the contract will be palatable.

Sweat has grown into a more complete player over the years, he used to be questionable versus the run but has improved that part of his game a lot. I’m just not sure the Pats are in the market for an expensive DE when they just signed Dremont Jones to spell Milton Williams.

He’d cost $24M against the cap, for 2 years. He’s 29 now, birthday is in March so he turns 31 right when he’ll be negotiating his next contract. Seems a safe assumption that he will be going for top dollar then, so not a safe assumption we resign it. Ergo assume it’s a two year rental.

Is he worth $24 million a year for the next two years?

That's not a bad contract or cap hits for a guy who can wreak havoc...looks doable.

Right, but the problem becomes that other teams know this and the better teams he actually wants to go to might be wary of the antics. That said, if he isn't demanding more money from his new team and his remaining dollars are not guaranteed then he may still have a decent market, as any further problems would just lead to him being dumped. Of course that also negatively impacts his trade value.

The signing bonus has to be paid out by the Cardinals, and the option bonus might have to be as well. Assuming that's the case, this contract is actually laid out like this for the acquiring team:

2026 - $9.8M salary (guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit ~$10M
2027 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M
2028 - $17M salary (non-guaranteed), $100K workout bonus - cap hit $17M

So in reality it's more like a one-year deal for about $10M guaranteed, with two option years added on at $17M per year. If he is a good soldier, you can keep him for modest money, renegotiate those dollars etc. If he is not worth hanging onto, you can cut bait after one year for no cost and you only paid about $10M for a one year rental.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of cap economics. The Jamie Collins situation was a great example of that. The Patriots traded him away at the last second of the trade deadline to Cleveland, even though some coping Patriot’s fans said it was due to performance… it wasn’t.

Cleveland made him the highest paid ILB in the NFL and a few years later Belichick reacquired a player fans said he traded away due to performance. The cap exists.
