As Manx has pointed out, this draft will tell us a lot about the new regime's draft approach, philosophy, and priorities. Patspulpit had several good tidbits from a recent interview:

On drafting for need:

“I don’t think you should ever draft for need. That’s not a position that you ever want to be in,” Vrabel explained.

On valuing versatility:

The Patriots’ first signing in free agency was reported mere minutes into the legal tampering window, with Dre’Mont Jones joining the club on a three-year, $36.5 million deal to provide starter-level experience on the edge. One of the reasons why the club was interested in Jones was his ability to align both inside and outside.

For Mike Vrabel, versatility like that is that the heart of his team’s roster construction.

“It’s so critical when you only have 48 players on the active roster on Sundays,” Vrabel said. “Eight of them are O-linemen; they’re not doing anything but blocking. Two of them are quarterbacks; last year there was three of them. You have a kicker, a punter, a snapper. The list gets limited there.”

Jones is not the only versatile piece added by the team. Guard Alijah Vera-Tucker has experience at four of the five offensive line positions, while wide receiver Romeo Doubs can play both the X and the Z-receiver role.

When you have guys that can play more than one position, linebacker or safety, and maybe a linebacker on third down or a sub ‘backer, or you have an outside linebacker that can go inside on third down or passing downs, we would love to have as many players that are as versatile as possible,” said Vrabel.

Treydan Stukes, Jake Golday and Kyle Louis are guys who stand out on defense in terms of versatility. De'Zhaun Stribling, Eli Heidenreich, Adam Randall and Keagen Trost on offense.

It will be interesting to see how things play out.

I would love to draft Jake Golday as a Vrabel clone: OLB who can play ILB, EDGE, drop into coverage, rush the passer, spy the QB ...

and maybe get him and his 6.84 3C a few snaps at TE.

Yeomen’s work to Manx and yourself
Have not had much time to look into draft material this year. The amount of material you both bring to this forum is much appreciated

Between mapus release now and Mumford leaving i don't understand the draft philosophy. They both were jags but there's barely any depth at either position.

Vrabel wants to follow the belichick strategy of not having holes on your roster before the draft but what is going on? Bad, not promising linebacker room and an oline room that has 2 guys who probably won't be here next year and AVT who is an injury risk.

Theres lots of open spots. I know they'll get filled by the draft and udfa but the pantry is pretty bare

And Gibbens. Thank god we have 10 draft picks because right now, we need them.

I'm sure it will all work out, but as you say, I don't know what the plan is.

Maybe he's hoping another team will sign Mapu before the draft, pushing other LB prospects down.

Mapu never lived up to the Daniel Jeremiah hype, but he was not trash. He had some depth and ST value.

I still don't understand why we didn't make a run at Leo Chenal. Would have made so much sense.

2023 draft had 12 picks and I think after mapu the only guys left are gonzo, bryce, boutte and demario.

I think both of you (manx and mayo) have said there's 7 oline yall like in the 1st/early 2nd you like so id caution trading back into the 2nd like I've seen in a few places. Id rather have the pats jump up in the 2nd and grab Rodriguez. I got a good feeling about that dude.

Anyway, I like the idea of consolidating picks for better bang for the buck. Maybe jumping up in the 2nd isnt realistic since so many teams don't have a 1st. Im also presuming we get brown but I like the idea someone floated of getting hurst on the 3rd. Maybe jump up in the 3rd for a wr.

Id go RT, LB, WR. I know we need edge badly but so does everyone. We can get coverage sacks and then go big next year in FA and draft once Landrys contract is easier to chuck

I disagree a little although I agree with the possibility of trading up in the 2nd. If they go RT at 31, I think a 2nd round EDGE is inevitable, hopefully with a trade up. If they go EDGE at 31, I think the draft opens up a bit more to LB or safety (maybe TE) at 63. If they go LB or safety at 31, then it's back to EDGE in the 2nd.

EDGE is too much of a need not to get one early.
What they could do though is go for this uber athletic DT's and LB's and try some different combinations at DE instead of going with more traditional edge rushers.

If we trade up we'll have (hyperbole moment) 12 UFDA's rounding out the Draft that could make the team..

I think Vrabel was joking or being sarcastic, considering he’s probably taken a zillion questions about if the Pats are going to draft a TE in a deep TE draft, and the need for a young TE in the system.

That being said, people always say there is some truth in people’s jokes. Hopefully there is some truth in his comments about TEs in this draft. Would love to double up. With TE being such a great weapon, and with 10 TEs running a 4.70 or under at the combine, and Delp running under a 4.5 at his pro day (coming off a fractured foot), man I’d love to see the Pat’s grab 2 TEs that run a 4.7 or under.

I hope so.
I knew you were going to say that.. *LOL* ..

Think I should send my trade Ideas to Stacey James and ask him to show Vrabel and Wolf??? Then it would be more likely to get Stukes as well as either Jacas or Iheanachor..

Vrabel loves tight ends:

Great draft to load up on TEs.
Despite what he said above, they need to draft a TE this year; the only top 200 draft picks they've spent in the past decade were the unfortunate 2020 picks of Keene and Asiasi.
