Patriots Rumor A.J. Brown trade rumors heat up - Should Patriots get him?

A report indicating the Patriots are potentially in the market for this player, or have expressed or plant to express interest.
I think they have pushed Goedert’s void date out because if his deal voids then they take on more dead money and it becomes impossible to trade AJ Brown before June 1. On the other hand, if they extend him, they can gain a bit of cap relief and it makes it possible to trade AJ Brown. They will be left with only a little cap room (probably less than $10M at this time, I would guess) but enough to operate for the rest of the year, and there would be some small avenues to create a little more.

They certainly could wait until June, but at that point the picks become 2027 picks and they lose leverage, and the longer Brown is stuck in Philly the greater chance for drama or for him to outright demand a trade etc. I am guessing that Roseman wants 2026 picks and wants to maintain higher leverage and seize the current moment and not let it drag 2.5 months. He will take the hit on the cap in 2026 when he probably feels Sirianni is a lame duck anyway, then turn the keys over to a new HC in 2027 with a very clean cap and room to make a free agency splash, or even to move on from Hurts if they choose to.
So they have a disgruntled WR who is a negative force in their locker room, who is aging, has injury concerns, and a cap crippling contract.

Remind me again why the Pats need to trade a lot of valuable resources to bail Philly out?

Goedert's 3 day extension does not have to be about AJ Brown at all. It can be just about Goedert. The team wants him to stay. Allowing the contract to void would result in a $20.5 million dead cap hit. The Eagles have about $48 million in dead cap as of today. If Goedert's contract expires Monday, they will be close to $68 million. They still need to figure out Carter's extension. This couldn be more about Carter than Brown.

If AJ is traded this weekend and Goedert walks, the dead cap jumps to $111, which is 36.7% of the salary cap. That's just not happening. If Brown is traded this weekend, he still brings a dead cap hit of $43 million. Goedert's salary is going down one way or another this weekend. Its unrelated to Brown. Brown's dead cap can't be split until after June 1. If Brown is traded, it will be after that. Sorry, not this weekend.
Then why hasn’t Goedert been extended already? Why extend the void deadline twice? They must be in agreement pending something. Until Brown is traded, there’s no guarantee he will be. It’s a good WR draft. Maybe, real interest in Brown disappears after the draft. The Eagles have no cap cushion because of the option bonus structure the use. Simple restructures aren’t an option. The obvious reason is the Eagles need to move Brown before committing money to Goedert and still have cap space to sign their rookie class and make it through the end of the rule of 51, inevitable injuries and practice squad.

They lost their leverage when the Patriots told them to go screw, when they wouldn't move off the first round pick.

Florio says the Rams are out, to the surprise of absolutely nobody.
My feeling is that Russini is a mouthpiece for Howie Roseman, and her reporting that the Rams were trying to get Brown was just a play to try to push the Pats. Didn't work.

That's who she's talking to, yes. She does talk to Cowden too, but she's sweeping for Roseman.
Was it her that put the 'They have to understand the poor Eagles are going to have to pay' thing out there from someone else?

DD I definitely hear ya brother and you make great points...I'll add that pierce has an MVP level RB in J. Taylor that makes defenses have to over committ to stop him.. that allows for pierce to have favorable match ups as he's slippery guy and has good straight line speed.. Boutte is a guy that is continuing to get better each season and has a great connection with Drake.
We have moved moves to strengthen the run, which excites me.
Again, we were an ok running team buy years end, but we were terrible the first half of the season.

I never saw the Rams are a realistic option. I think the Eagles would ask them for a premium to make the trade because trading Brown to them hurts their chances of going to the Super Bowl. You cannot weaken yourself and make one of your main competitors for the conference better in a trade unless they vastly overpay for him. I don't see Roseman trading Brown in conference unless someone seriously overpays for him or the team he is trading Brown to absolutely sucks and is no threat to the Eagles' chances of going to the Super Bowl this upcoming season.

Besides, the Rams don't need another #1 WR. They already have two. I guess they could cut or trade Adams if they got Brown, but the one area they top talent help the least is WR.

And we were a bottom half red zone offense and terrible in 3rd and short.. Adding gilliam at FB and AVT are huge pick ups... these guys are physical and love to get after it...

Can't remember who said it at this point.

Because he won’t be as negative here, at first.

Once we get him N.. patsfans.com will be...

Didn't Brown sorta vanish in January a la Diggs? Couple key drops in last game.

There is no way Brown isn't being traded this year. And Pats seem the most likely destination. For the Eagles, if they extend Goedert, they likely prefer a pre-June 1 trade as it makes 2027 a lot easier to manage. The Pats don't care all that much - they'd obviously prefer to give picks next year than this, but the draft is easier if you know for sure he's coming here (and the OTA's etc. are better too if it's a done deal early).

I predict a 2nd and 4th done prior to June 1. We're no longer desperate, but the Eagles are.
