Patriots Player Departure Chaisson To The Commanders

Weird. His market must have been way lower than he expected. Kind of surprised we didn't match that but I would guess we allocated a certain amount of "pass rush money" to Dre'mont Jones.

I might be totally misremembering here, but wasn't there some reporting that his knee issue was a degenerative one and would need careful management?

Some folks here were making it sound like that but i have no information myself on any pre existing knee issues. I just knew he tore an acl a few years back but recovered and had another productive year in Tennessee before we signed him.

one year 12m is short money, which we could have easily covered...

Unless there were a lot of red flags behind the scenes, it really doesn't make sense that we did not bring him back... maybe this year was a fluke, but it would have been nice to see if he could have strung a couple good years together in New England...

He was terrible setting the edge which the Pats feel Jones must be better at. No way they were going to pay both Jones and Chaisson that level of money.

He was a hit or miss player. If his speed rush didn't work, T's would just throw him out of the play. Good for him he got his money.

One thing to remember is that this EDGE class is supposed to be a really good and deep one. It's why you're seeing a lot of EDGEs be available through the free agency and trade. I think the team expects to draft at least one and they may already rate whatever rookie they get as better than Chaisson.

He was worth the 5 mill we paid, he wasn’t worth 12.
He had a so so year after a horrible carrer to date before.

While it is quite deep, there is also expected to be strong demand and an early run on DE's. The quality will likely take a significant nosedive after the first 50 picks going by most projections.

Considering they were looking for edge rushers at the trade deadline, I don't think they were that impressed by Chaisson.
I agree with this. And the rest of the league agrees since he signed a one year deal. I thought he was pretty solid and I would have brought him back for one year at 12 million but the Pats coaches clearly do not agree. SB1 appears to be correct in his analysis of Chaissons play and the Patriots saw it the same way. Need to shore up edge, I would guess that is the first pick in the draft.

Doesn't make sense not to bring him back at that price.
A word i hadn't thought of in years popped into my head when i read this...Stupefying for not bringing him back at that price. In todays market thats peanuts

I agree.
Surprising. Disappointing.
You can argue “so-so” but some of those “so’s” were game-winning plays.
He far exceeded his prior deal. There was some vague reference that he wanted to play for the Patriots.
A more than fair deal. Plenty of cap space. Knew the system and avoided creating a hole and “need” pick.

I loved his effort a lot of his sacks came on second effort on QB's driven out of the pocket, but he was a one trick pony who couldn't set the edge.

Not signing him will make sense if we sign Chenal. I really like what I've read about him

Edge rusher is one of those spots that you can never have too many. I wanted to see Chaisson retained or replaced and then a veteran addition added on top of that so Landry's role could be reduced. And then I wanted to see a drafted player to go with Ponder/Swinson behind those 3. I expect Landry to be cut this time next year and I always like having replacements a year early where you can.

Jones satisfies the retain/replace Chaisson signing, but I'd like to see one more addition we can rely on for snaps. Since Jones is bigger than Chaisson maybe now they can go for the more readily available small pass rush only type at least. Could have just kept Chaisson on this deal too, but seems kind of pricey for the role I guess.

My belief is that this makes EDGE in the first all but inevitable. I don't think Jones and Landry as starters can be the answer.
Its' a deep draft at EDGE so no question top 3 but yes, this adds to the need factor

Agree...

I'm stupefied by the number of years, the amount he got and why we didn't re-sign him.

Signings aren't official until 4pm EST unless the player was a Street Free Agent or had been cut by their previous team. Players / teams can change their mind before the 4pm EST official Start time of NFL Free Agency.
