Player Signing Tommy DeVito re-signed

We've taken out a $2M option.

We can bring the normal 4 QB's to camp and then choose who to keep as our QB2 and QB3 (emergency).

I see no advantage in moving Dobbs now.
He was scheduled to be a restricted free agent. If they view him as 50/50 to make the roster, they could've just given him the right of first refusal tender, which is about the same money ($3.5M/1 year), but without the $2M guarantee.

Danny is proud of his son.

I wonder if Joe Milton still thinks he should be the starting QB?

Interesting, given they felt Dobbs was a better choice for QB2 all season.
But now my man Tommy will have a full training camp to develop & learn the system and receivers better
If he has the expected talent the staff sees in him, he'll develop into a better option than Dobbs was.

Good move and it frees up some cap money...
We have been hearing his name for a while now, glad he is on board...
What do you mean by "it frees up some cap money"? Do you mean it frees up some in lieu of the RFA tender, which they hadn't placed on him yet?

This is Dandy

I know we don't much about Devito really, but I was thrilled to get him last cutdowns. Also must say that Dobbs was exactly what we needed in a backup and in his few reps last year. When he came in and escaped the rush and bulleted a pass to Pop for a big first down, that was impressive. I think Devito has the moxy that it takes to step into a big game on a moments notice and play brave. He also has the body type and play style closer to Maye, so I think it could be a good longer term fit.

I still wish we’d have signed Mason Rudolph last year, instead of Dobbs. Basically same money, and Rudolph and Drake are BFFs.

FWIW, Rudolph signed five days before Dobbs did, so it's at least possible that Vrabel et al. did try to sign him, but couldn't.

In any case, PIT was the better choice careerwise for Rudolph, as he had an easier path to possibly starting there than he would have had backing up Maye. [They didn't sign Fraudgers until June.]

In the meantime, Maye is the franchise and has shown to be fairly sturdy, relatively speaking as far as athletic QBs go, and DeVito is experienced in the system and has shown the ability to step in and win games as a backup when needed in spot starts, while also still being young himself and having some room to grow. Good setup.

Devito will be Maye's Bryan Hoyer.

As a career trajectory DeVito in my humble opinion has alot more upside than Rudolph.. Rudolph is basically a career back up in the league. DeVito with the coaching he's getting here will likely end up being a starting QB at some point in his young NFL career somewhere in the league.

FWIW he's about the same age as Mac Jones (28 when the season starts), and Rudolph will be 31.

That's my hope, but he's very young, so I am guessing he will also follow the parts of Hoyer's career where he got signed by a few bad teams a couple times to be their starter after looking good in spot starts/preseason games for the Patriots, only to be just average (since he is still ultimately just a backup) and ultimately come back to NE again.

Devito's got a little something. He's not an all-pro, but should something happen, I feel like he could hold the fort down in the meantime.

I like this as a sneaky signing.
