Will Campbell Watch

He's just a guard, just look at him.

He doesn't look like any other LT in the league, let's hope he's a good guard because otherwise it's a disaster of a 4th overall pick.

If the option is being an undersized average/slightly below average LT or a very good guard i would take the latter.

To be honest, i don't blame Campbell very much. He played as well as he can, you can't force yourself to become stronger than you are or more skilled. What is bewildering is why he wasn't benched when it was obvious that as long as he plays, the team would suffer.

He was a liability in the playoffs, so why didn't the coaching staff consider a contingency if he played bad again, and couldn't stop the rush? This was the thing that pissed me off at the benching of Butler, not the original decision, it might have made sense when it was made, but when Rowe, Richards and Bademosi were playing bad football and we couldn't force one punt, playing Butler was the only reasonable thing. He couldn't have possibly be worse than Bademosi. You owe it to the team to give it every chance to win.

The same thing with keeping Campbell in the second half. The offense was DIRE in the first half, scoring 0 points in a Super Bowl is abysmal and Campbell was a big reason for the struggles. Why not try Lowe? You can't score fewer points than zero, so nothing Lowe did could have been worse than Campbell. The same thing goes for Wilson.

People will blame the players, and the offense certainly deserves a lot of criticism but it's up to the coaches to make changes, and Vrabel did none. A really poor coaching job altogether. The entire plan seemed to be to hang with them as long as we can and try to win the game in the fourth, or until Darnold collapses and starts turning the ball over. There was no pro-active strategy to win the game.

If he's trending toward being our Robert Gallery then that's a massive swing and a miss for where he was drafted. Hopefully not.

In a redraft......
3rd round ??????

Every pass protection rep from Will Campbell. It’s not great, and he’s lacking strength (knee injury can’t have helped), but I don’t see 14 pressures here?

PFF assigned him 3, FWIW.

I don’t understand why they kept playing them both. Lowe and Brown would not have been worse
I think there are a lot of people asking the same question, myself included. The only possible thing I can think off was that Campell, Wilson and Maye, for that matter, are all extremely young and pulling them in the biggest game of their lives may cause the kind of harm they wouldn't be able to recover from in the future. This is NOT a good reason to continue fielding inferior player, but the only thing that really comes to mind.

Yeah, there is no way he gave up 14 pressures. Maybe half that at most.

What defines a "pressure" is so subjective. Watching that footage, I will say that he's very, very consistently pushed back near Maye. He lets the defenders get close enough to swipe at the ball or forces Maye to reposition himself way too often. I'm no OL technician so not sure exactly what adjustments need to be made but he needs to be able to avoid giving up so much ground on initial contact every time.

All that shows is that Wilson was the weakest link not Campbell, absolutely clueless. And that Moses was just as bad.

Campbell was completely unable to anchor and take on whoever was coming at him. Actually after watching that I question what the hell was the coaching staff thinking having him out there.
All in all, classic overreaction. I get it, we lost the superbowl but blaming Campbell for that is ridiculous.

He either gave up the game before it even started or he is clearly injured.

I agree that he was injured and the coaching staff decided he was their best option for the game. I think with a full offseason with the coaching staff he, will improve his technique and strength.

He's not changing positions.

Well I'm glad you shared this cause it shows that Campbell had very little to do with the problems we had, just as I thought. Aside from the 1st play and I think the 19th, there were none where he was beat clean or caused any bad result. On play 2, Wilson bumped the rusher off WC's block which caused the sack. Will got pushed back a lot, but generally held his ground just enough. On a few he got pushed all the way to Maye but Drake was still able to get the pass off and complete it. He was NOT the reason Maye got hit so much, had 3 turnovers, or looked besieged. Not saying he was great, just not disastrous like so many critics are claiming.

Nwosu #7 was the biggest problem. He caused as many problems for Moses as he did for Campbell.

We drafted for need. To be fair Campbell played well against average edge rushers. It's just he got keenly exposed against elite ones.

Myles Garrett notching 5 sacks against the Patriots was a red flag. You could almost have dismissed it as an outlier because Garrett is probably the best defensive end in all of football. However Campbell's struggles continued into the postseason and he was EXPOSED today by the Seahawks defense.

I believe we need to continue looking for a bona fide left tackle to protect Maye's blind side. Move up in the 1st if you have to because our OL would look significantly better if we kicked everybody on the left Inside by a slot. Campbell to guard and Wilson to center. With a legit New Left tackle we could be cooking next season!

There is no left tackle in this draft who would be better than Campbell is.
We will be lucky if Campbell ends up being a serviceable guard. He looked like an outright bust last night. Came as close as possible to losing the game single-handedly.
Total ********. It's amazing just how fickle you and others like you are. You are a front running fan who said this team was going to be **** and they ended up in the Super Bowl, a day later you're right back to the **** talk. And I know what comes next, if they don't get the top 5 free agents within 20 minutes of free agency opening up you will start shrieking about how much they suck, just like you did the first day of free agency last year. Fans like you truly suck.

They have to go back to the drawing board, Campbell is not the answer, I think he is flat out terrible. As the season went on I've become less and less impressed with the rookie class outside of Woodson (kicker's been ok too).

What a ****ing moron.

He needs to at least get stronger
