Maye and O-line concerns

Henderson was a major problem.
Not only was his blocking/chipping ineffective/useless....but it appeared the Texans D went into attack mode when he was in the backfield. 12 carries/25 yds (2.1 yds ave.)....1 reception/ -2 yds
Getting Rham back was huge (4.4 yds ave.)

The Pats are going to the AFCCG with an offense that half of the starters are 23 years old or younger! That is amazing and they will only get better. In the age of COVID and NIL money, you have guys coming into the NFL at 24 as rookies! Bo Nix is 25.

They will all get better over the next few seasons.

Bunch of turnovers over the past two weeks. What needs to happen to cut down on these turnovers?

I think first we need to give Will Campbell more help because he just can’t do much against any pass rushers. He is a rookie and we probably need a TE next to him or a RB to help him.

Next, Maye needs to protect the ball better. Fumbles galore. He will need to have better pocket awareness especially when he feels that the rush is coming.

Protecting the ball is a must. Today we got bailed by the defense.
.
Poorly rendered AI, but you get the gist.... Seriously though, I have seen some complaining about not giving the line a RB or TE to chip. I believe (I haven't gone back to check) on one of the fumbles Drake had Rham in the backfield and sent him out wide before the snap. If that is true he should have been extra sensitive to the rush from that side.

Man - look at that after game tunnel interaction between Vrabel and Campbell - - that says it all:

Vrabel knows the mistake he has done to Campbell and Jared Wilson. The same type of situation of Pat Chung (the first go round).

Belichick, once Chung went to Philly, did a rare Mea Culpa at a presser saying it was NOT Chung's fault - - that he and the coaching staff put Chung in a position NOT to succeed. The Second Go Round Chung was far better - - same player, according to Belichick, but better coaching management and positioning.

Campbell and Wilson have been just ok this rookie year and terrible the past two games because they are dealing with injuries and rust from their layoffs and going directly into the frying pan against the Chargers and Texans D in their first playoff games.

They each should move one postion over to the right - Campbell to LG and Wilson to Center - both positions where they more comfort and are better body types for. That tunnel clip says a thousand words.

Make that adjustment next year and get another LT in the draft or FA. That line could be better then.

I love a thread that makes me honk
Chism might get open on some lucky chance, but he's in there because Hollins is out, no?

What I'm getting at is I don't think Chism is all that good and that's why it's difficult to plan on him playing that role.
I'm just speculating that you might not what you're talking about but since I don't what I'm talking about, you very well could be also be wrong, no?

Take the good with the bad.

We played a pretty good defense that doesn't allow you to run or throw short safe passes.

The only way to beat them is with long developing routes that take time. That's how the Patriots won today. Throwing the ball downfield. Maye is the only QB to throw 3 TDs against the Texans, and he did it without throwing an Interception during the normal course of play.

The fumbles are what happens when you hold the ball for 3+ seconds while you're looking for the big hit.

2 of those fumbles were not like the other 2 however. One was a busted play by Treveyon when Maye ran it and the other was a complete whiff by Campbell which occurred in 2 seconds.
I think the other one might have been when Moses whiffed on Hunter. Before we panic, let's note that despite constant pressure, Maye never panicked. I have no complaints about him.

Someone needed to be helping on the left side (a 6th OL or a TE).

Yes - Campbell needs help
Yes - Hendo has been bad AND playcalling with him in the I-formation is 100% a tell. They need to shake that up.

And I've been saying it the last month, we need a 3rd RB who can actually run for positive 3 yards. Johnson is useless, so activate Jennings or one of the PS RB's. And, start using Hendo as an outside screen/slot end-around guy, not between tackles runner.

Maye's pocket awareness can be very poor at times. Anderson was jumping snaps, yet Maye just went about his usual throwing motion as if nobody was there. That led to multiple strip sacks. He's got to learn to pick it up and get throw out quicker or move around.

I'll give Campbell a pass as he's a rookie going against one of the league's best pass rushing duo's, but Light and Solder had these issues throughout their careers that went ignored by media/fans because Brady was lighting quick with his decisions/footwork/throws.

But I am wondering why Maye and/or McDaniels seem relatively allergic to the Edelman/Amendola role. Chism in particular seemed like he could've been useful in negating the pass rush, but he was just about the only pass catcher Maye didn't target.

I'll have to go back and look, but Diggs has been taking a lot of his snaps from the slot, so he is in that role, but he was also getting double teamed last week which took away the 1st read and the quick pass.

He needs WRs who can get open very quickly. He does not yet have that yet. Maye did his best yesterday. I don't fault him that he chose to trust his left tackle to push a rusher back a mere one feet!.

That's clearly on Will for getting beat. 4th overall pick and he's had a full season under his belt now.
what this clip doesn't show is that Drake had Rham in the backfield and slid him out to the slot right before the snap. Perhaps he should have left the extra protection in?

Maye's 23.

This roster is still in rebuild mode. That's what makes this run all the more remarkable.
This team is only going to get better as time goes on.

We just have to live with the downs and the limitations in this particular run, and hope they can rise above it with superior coaching and game awareness.

Why? It wasn't a blitz? If Will can't handle a guy 1 on 1 then he shouldn't be in that position. I get it that guys get beat occasionally but we've seen it enough times to know he is not the long-term solution IMO.

I think it's reasonable to suspect Campbell might still be compromised by his knee injury. I certainly think the effort to develop him as a LT should continue. But I also think that if in the end he serves as a really excellent guard, which I think he could, there's nothing wrong or tragic about that. I suppose that's a high pick for a guard, but plenty of high draft picks turn out to be of no use at all, so we're still ahead of the curve. I also think he an excellent "character guy" who is a reall asset in the locker room. So it's all good, it seems to me. In the meantime, chip away: as a team, we are doing great

I'm lost.

Watched the game again, Drake played a heck of a game. His stats tells an other wise picture. If he is getting the ball stripped in less than 2 secs, I don't know what intental clock folks want him operating with none of our receivers breaking that quickly. Fix the left side of the OL like I have been saying and Drake will be scary. He had people opened and Houston got lucky with timely strips.
