Will Campbell Watch

Not excited about Campbell’s play the last couple of games. Getting beaten like a drum by good rushers isn’t ideal. He’s not gonna quiet the Guard talk if he keeps this up. Hopefully the problem is he’s not healthy yet and not something else.
He struggles in space.

He is not it at LT. A good player but LT is not his ultimate position. We can excuse his play with injuries, but prior to injury, the evidence was there against premier rushers.

He's an average LT. He would be a dominant Guard. If we can get a legit left tackle, move Campbell at G and shift Wilson at C, we'll have a dominant left side.

He would be as good as Mankins was for us and can still be our anchor at OL.

Maye was culpable with some turnovers but so was Campbell. I thought he started off okay.

I’m not sure it’s space so much as when the DE lines up exceptionly wide. Could be you mean the same thing & not sure if many see a distinction between “in-space” vs “wide-aligned. “

Directionally same result…DE does that to create space to move because they can flat rush wide OR use a counter back to the inside if LT oversets.

While Denver D is very good, it’s not the same edge/DL challenge as this week. But no one is really.

So proud of Boutte & Rham. These unheralded guys scraping along on a sucky team through 2 head coaching changes, several QB's, each getting benched along the way... and here they are making veteran big-time plays in the playoffs to get to the AFCCG.
I mean Rham had 70 yards for 4.4 avg. against the best D in the league. After the start he had, this is so great to see.
Boutte is the leading receiver, with one of the great playoff TD-catches ever.

The rookie & 2nd year QB still have growing to do. Each has a part in this recent sack/fumble streak. But I would never throw Campbell away as LT. He can certainly work a lot on technique and core strength in the offseason to improve.

They should've given more help, also Stephenson was out a portion of the game

I'll be honest, I wasn't particularly disappointed. That was the best defensive line in football, and we held up alright. A defense like that is gonna get their hits in. We probably won't face a tougher challenge in the poostseason, and we know that our OL is very young so we know they're going to take advantage at times. They still held up well enough to go downfield for 3 tuds. That's not bad. It could definitely improve of course, but still -- not bad at all.

The OL held up just about well enough that all the pressure we managed to put on Stroud could be the difference in the game. It didn't always look great, but everyone did their job and it was just about enough to win the football game.

If they should get to the big game and have to face Seattle, that might be the ultimate test.

The Texans' defense is better than Seattle, and the Seahawks OL also sucks the big one. Also Darnold isn't as mobile as Stroud.

Also I cannot possibly believe that seeing the Flying Elvis on opposing helmets is a comfortable place for a guy who was drafted by the Jets to be. If we end up facing Darnold in the playoffs we'll bring the ghosts with us. I am surprisingly confident about this.

Doomsayers always neglect that there are learning curves. And offensive line play, especially pass protection, has a fairly high learning curve. Let's see how he continues to develop at LT.

I think it’d be a mistake to overreact to two straight bad games against elite rushers. Overall he had a very good rookie year and to just ignore that because of two bad games against great players (or even three such games if you include the CLE game).

At the same time, I can’t bury my head in the sand and pretend it’s not concerning at all. I really don’t want to keep rehashing the arm length thing, but as much as some people want to deny it the reason it’s talked about for LTs is because it’s a physical trait that has actual function on the field at that spot. Guys who lack reach struggle exactly how he’s struggled the last few weeks with guys being able to run the arc on them to the QB and swat at the ball off the blind side.

If he was getting confused on stunts I’d be more quick to just say rookie learning curve. The bottom line is he’s a player with an actual physical deficiency for the position and that’s specifically what’s causing his bad play. He’s not going to grow. Again, you have to look at his season on the whole and to write him off and start the talking of moving him to LG is an overreaction, but I also don’t understand how someone could see these last two weeks and not have at least some real concern.

If your rookie Tackle is being abused by a speed rush, it's up to the coach to scheme up the people to help. To expect perfection and no growing pains is absurd.

Absolutely absurd.

To expect the #4 pick in the draft to be average is a ridiculous expectation. Campbell is injured or is misunderstood? There are so many fans with so many expectations that are ridiculous. People are absurd to expect a high draft pick making millions of dollars a year to perform.

I recall something post draft and before the pre-season that said Campbell will make an average/good LT in the NFL, but will likely struggle with upper tier pass rushers. And here we are.
