To Win is to Fail?

Mayfield definitely stinks this season, though. No two ways around that. I noted yesterday that you never see him talking to OBJ and Landry on the sidelines.

Mayfield is so Brett Favre-like its scary. He desperately needs a quarterback whisperer. Favre had Holmgren, Mariucci, Reid, and Gruden - all pretty well known for crafting QBs. He doesn't get that TLC to hone in the wild tendencies and disregard for any semblance of control in the next year or two...ugh.

Yes, indeed.

Consider CLE being coached by Josh.

Flores has already established his culture there by trimming the fat. Winning is useless at this point. That’s especially true if you really believe BB’s philosophy that every year is different and unique. Winning at this point isn’t putting you in the playoffs and each win only takes away names that would either be at or near the top of your draft board. In other words - this isn’t the time to win anymore. That would have been at the start of the season. They clearly committed to tanking, and they can’t even do that right anymore. It’ll be hilarious if they end up missing out on either of the top two prospects. But at least they’ll have a few completely meaningless wins to look back on in 2019 and appreciate as they’re preaching to treat the 2020 season as if 2019 didn’t happen and that it is a new year, new team, and with new challenges.
So if you think Belichick supports tanking why didn’t they pack it in at 2-8 in 2000 instead of winning 3 of their final 6?

Fantastic effort by the Dolphins today. However, was this win actually the ultimate backbreaker that could doom the team for years to come?

The goal for the Dolphins this season seemed to be awfulness par excellence to net Tua Tagovailoa. Now they are two games behind the Bengals in the year of "Tank for Tua."

Tua could become a legitimate talent in the league at roughly the time the Patriots lose Brady. Should the Dolphins have done a better job at being awful, or do you think building a winning mentality now is the smarter move?

I'm not worried long-term about Buffalo or the Jets with their quarterbacks. Tua in the division would be a real threat, though, so maybe the Dolphins winning today will be a great boon for the Patriots.

If we clinch the number one seed, I hope we rest everyone in the final regular season game so we can lower the Dolphins in the draft.

Since we're making wishes, I hope that the Pats have the #1 seed wrapped up and rest everyone in the final two regular season games so we can lower the Dolphins in the draft and get the Bills into the playoffs over the Steelers.

Seriously though, it's never a good thing to lose. Indy tried that a couple of times during the PEDton years and never won anything again.

Not sure the Pats didn't try winning that game, Deus, or that Cassel's incompletion on the 2-point conversion was intentional. I was there and recall him being under pressure when he made the throw.

I remember having the same discussion with Indiot fans about that play. What do those people think, that Bill wanted some time off during playoff time? It's just plain preposterous to believe that Belichick told Cassell to throw that 2 pointer away.

Here are the last 15 NFL 1st picks for the past decade and a half.

Alex Smith
Mario Williams
Jamarcus Russell
Jake Long
Matthew Stafford
Sam Bradford
Cam Newton
Andrew Luck
Eric Fisher
Jameis Winston
Jadeveon Clowney
Jared Goff
Myles Garrett
Baker Mayfield
Kyler Murray

How did the franchises who drafted those #1 NFL picks fare??????? Is it REALLY worth tanking?

I can understand a salary cap dump and goal of stocking MANY high draft picks going forward, but why in the world would any NFL team want to tank their franchise to attain SPECIFICALLY the #1 pick in the draft?????????????

It's like stupid poor people buying lottery tickets. (The SMART poor people don't ;))

History shows that very often the first player picked isn’t the best player. How many of the best QBs in the NFL were the first QB picked in their draft?

Not sure, but there's a lot of #1 pick QBs that would be good to very good recently:
Manning, Vick, Manning, C. Palmer, Alex Smith, Stafford, Newton, Luck, Goff, Mayfield and Murray (I know, don’t know yet about the last two).

The Dolphins also have to sell tickets to current Dolphin fans BTW. They do have an interest in winning sometimes.

Where in that post did I say that Belichick supports tanking? Quote the specific part that you’re referring to.

Mcarron was talked up by NFL execs and not mouth breathing Bama fans.

Never has a school garnered more press over their QBs than Alabama. Stupid people buy the Tua hype.
No, he got a lot of talk because his fiancée (now wife) was gorgeous.

All those things should be looked at plus how he performs in big games - as well as how clutch is he in close moments - and similar "intangibles" are what separates the measurables "as hyped" for most 1st round picks and the more important utilization of those measurables in such a way to impact winning versus stat padding. Not saying Burrow IS those things, just those are what needs to be examined.

That's the main difference between a Phillip Rivers who has all the measurables anyone could want but just doesn't do things well under pressure and a Russell Wilson or Drew Brees who don't have every measurable but sure do good things in pressure situations

(well, one goal throw aside.....)

Burrow was masterful in the LSU-Alabama showdown. That was a heck of a game. No question he shines on the big stage.

Your entire post.
You say Flores should tank and support it by saying it’s consistent with BBs believe that every year is a different year.
If that was correct BB would have tanked in 2000.

I think we can rule out most of your list if the presumption is tanking now so you can win later because 9 of the 11 havent won a ring

If I am not mistaken those 15 players have 0 rings.

Imagine intentionally throwing games to get the number one pick and ending up with any of the QBs in bold. I'd probably stop watching football I'd be so depressed. And the ones I didn't highlight are still questionable in terms of the ultimate value they brought to their franchise, other than Pink Head.

Vick should be bolded and capitalized. He was 100% a bust of a pick at #1

The only sport where tanking might remotely make sense is the NBA. Even then, there are compelling arguments against it.

Yup. Being in the top ten of picks should be enough. Multiple first rounders is much better.

Btw, Eli should’nt count since he did not go to the team that drafted him first.
