Have opinions of Phillip Dorsett changed?

For me a a solid nr 3-4 wr but i will be excited to see Edelman + Gordon on the field

Yesterday an amazing td reception but a huge drop too

My opinion was he was a receiver with good speed and good hands who hadn't had a full year to learn the system. My opinion now is he is a receiver with good speed and good hands who seemingly has learned the system (and is in the places TB12 needs him to be).

Only two offensive players have produced more output than Dorsett: Gronk and White.

I think that makes him a solid contributor. I'm surprised nobody is hammering on Hogan- he's been an abysmal 8 for 15.

Once he shows consistency. He made two particularly good receiving plays including a terrific catch. He also dropped what would have been a 40 yard gain.

It's worth checking in the re-watch thread, but that situation almost looked like a replay of the Detroit game - Dorsett racing down the middle bracketed by two DBs. Except that, this time, Dorsett located the ball earlier, escaped the bracket, and got his hands on the ball instead of allowing the pick.

That's improvement right there.

The drop was the result of Dorsett not handling it cleanly, and then getting an "assist" from the DB.

From what I saw Dorsett slightly juggled the pass and the defender knocked it out- surely that's not a drop but a pass defended. If one of our DBs did that we would congratulate him on a good play.

Working against the CB1. We knew that was going to happen. If his play continues to blow with Edelman back, I’ll sound the panic alarm.

Dorsett clearly is an NFL caliber WR. As long as he is in the right system he'll have a solid career.

With that said he'll never be a desireable as a top 3 option. Anything after that he's fine

It didn't hit him in stride though. You don't wind up on your belly when a throw hits you in stride. He had to lunge for the ball. That's an overthrow.

Not exactly.

Unlike the throw in the Detroit game on a nearly identical play, this time Brady didn't try to fit it between the defenders to get it to Dorsett. Instead, he threw it outside the bracket and beyond/behind the DB to Dorsett's right, requiring Dorsett to escape the bracket to get to it ... putting it where only Dorsett could get to it.

It wasn't an easy adjustment for anyone to make "in stride", but Dorsett did and excellent job - good enough to give himself the opportunity to catch it cleanly. He didn't, and then the DB made sure that Dorsett couldn't recover.

That was a difficult connection to make for both Brady and Dorsett, and it wasn't missed by very much. I expect we'll see it made successfully at some point later this season.

He’s improving but I’d like to know if Gordon was on the field when he made those plays. If he was, Dorsett benefited from coverage that had to account for Gordon.

Dorsett caught 12 of 14 for 110 yards and a TD during the first two games - when Gordon wasn't even on the radar, much less on the field with Dorsett.

To be fair, they have been playing Hogan out of the slot where he doesn't seem to be that comfortable.
They need his blocking.

Yeah considering the routes they had him running in the preseason, I think there were hopes that he could fill the Cooks role but they're different players. I think once he slides in as the 4th WR, he'll be a more natural fit there. He's definitely improved from last season, though, and is clearly earning more of Brady's trust. Assuming Gordon continues to improve and Edelman can pick up where he left off in February of '17, the offense should be fine.

I've always been optimistic regarding him and his potential for a high quality #2-#3 WR. I think he still has room to improve before he gets to that point.

His hands have looked pretty good, so that deep-ball drop was a surprise.

The degree of difficulty in adjusting to the throw out of bracket coverage was fairly high. Dorsett should have caught it cleanly, but without an assist from the DB, he might have held on.

Difficult play on both ends that just missed.

Considering that, back in the spring, the overwhelming majority opinion was that Dorsett's chances of even making the team were slim-to-none, it appears that at least some opinions have changed.

Classic example of a guy finding his role by working at it and getting better. Last year he was behind Cooks and he didn't quit.

The other part is how much Brady controls it. Receiver can't look good if ball not thrown to him . Patterson comes to mind . Ok he fell down reaching for ball . Keep feeding him the ball .. his TD showed vision, great catch and yac...!

He dropped the ball.
Defender hit it out of his hands, after he bobbled it. He would've caught it without the PD so not totally a drop, but would've caught it if not bobbled so it is on him.

The narrative on Dorsett was all about his trade value relative to Brissett. To which I said the jury is still out. Now trade looks better since Dorsett caught his first TD and it was great catch.

The "drop" showed um... Keep practicing bro. When I see play like that , where he jumped a little, then got broken up , it looks like he's not relaxed enough in traffic to see the ball and take advantage of his body position. So not complete receiver.in that respect.

If you remember Jerry rice... What is it that made him great? #1 was his ridiculous work ethic and regimen. #2 was he caught the ball in balance at speed in traffic, without falling down. It's really a rare ability. Then you see Gordon's 2 catches. Both in traffic , great body control... :):)

I love how Gordon snatches the ball in traffic...Brady like going to Gronk in those situations but he now has Gordon too what options.

you are right, dorsett did leave his feet, although i'm not sure he had to. it still hit him in both hands, though, and solidly (not a fingertip catch). he should have caught it:

He should have caught it, but that was not an "easy" catch by any means. Back shoulder bullets you have to leave your feet for are probably the hardest "ordinary" catches a wideout has to make.

Not to mention, I only noticed it with the clip you posted with this camera angle, do you see what the DB did to break up that pass? Dorsett only lost contact with the ball after the DB made contact. If the DB hadn't grabbed Dorsett's left arm, he would have had that catch. That was a pass broken up by the Dolphins secondary, not a "drop" as such.
