Re: Pats sign Deltha O'Neal, release Spach, sign OL Bender and DeVree to practice squ

For the price...O'Neill is a good pickup...BUT

I wouldn't expect him to come in and be a consistent starting cornerback..
Unlikely to be anywhere near the same class as Samuels or Shephard.

The CB situation on the Patriots remains VERY weak.
Look at the CBs on the competitors in the EAST to measure where the PATS are
and you VERY MUCH do not get it..but that is OK.. Firstly you must be of the opinion to pay Samuels? see if the Eagles feel that same way after this year...

Well it seems to me that basically what the team has done is replace Fernando Bryant with Deltha O'Neal.

Looks like a no-brainer to me, especially after watching a Giants tight end run into the end zone carrying a football in his right arm and Bryant in his left.

Thats a very simple and excellent way to look at it and should IMO make everyone like this move. A vet CB we tried during camp didn't work so cut bait and than we were lucky to have someone on the market who throughout their careers is was better. Time will tell how good it really is but I don't see why people think it is a bad move at this point in time.

Re: Deltha O'Neil to be a Pat?

Im sorry which team do you GM for???

I think they know more than we do

I think he was GM for the San Clemente Forty Whiners

Re: Pats sign Deltha O'Neal, release Spach, sign OL Bender and DeVree to practice squ

As has been stated already numerous times, his release from the Bengals had a good deal to do with cap space, in all likelihood, as well as skills. Yes, O'Neal has been inconsistent, but he has been to two Pro Bowls, and is expensive for a team looking to sign other players, and could easily be replaced in the nickel position by a younger, cheaper guy who was just happy to play in the role he was given, rather than sulk for more playing time behind two top draft picks. Will he work out here, especially at this late date? Frankly, I am a bit doubtful...but it seems to be a low-risk signing, and one which allows some flexibility at the beginning of the year.

Re: Deltha O'Neal to be a Pat?

Sirius NFL Radio said that CB Deltha O'Neil will be meeting with and possibly signing with the Patriots today.

GREAT MOVE, if it happens.

that could be a good pickup

Finding FA corners isnt BB's thing, strike one was Starks, Bryant was number 2 and Deltha will be number 3.

Oh please, more self-appointed experts. Starks wasn't even a free agent signing, he was acquired through a trade. As for finding free agent corners... Terrell Buckley? Otis Smith? Tyrone Poole? Those names ring any bells? Every front office has hits and misses, and I'm frankly sick of the people on this board that harp on the few misses compared to the many, many hits of a front office that has delivered 3 Lombardis and a perfect regular season. This is a solid signing whether it pans out or not, it adds an accomplished veteran to a younger group of cornerbacks, and may solidify the position.

Never claimed to be an expert, just sayin seems like theres been alot more misses then hits as of late. Dont forget its not a sin or against the law to have opinions on signings of players.

Frankly, this is a very fair criticism. The Pats have had a disproportionate number of misses with FA CBs. When Tyrone Poole is the shining counterexample, that's not a great sign.

But on the flip side, drafting relatively unheralded corners and watching them blossom is BB's thing, which bodes well.

Nor is it to have opinions on those opinions, especially when they're offered in a public forum.

On balance, over the last eight years, have the Patriots used the free agent system to their benefit, or their deteriment?

I think the answer is clear. It's equally clear that there are no guarantees in the open market. You hit, you miss. The key is to hit more than you miss, not only in free agency, but the draft, UDFA's and trades too. The ones who do most often will be the ones going to the playoffs and Super Bowl most frequently. Easy concept, right?

Apparently not, not when you're still talking about Duane Starks three years after he last wore a Patriots uniform.

When talking about the pats failures at FA CBs can we list the alternatives they had at the time?

Have their actually been more misses of late, or is that you seeing what you want to see? Also what were the alternatives, if every FA at a certain position is either 'break the bank' or 'miss', what should a front office do? Overpay someone or sign no one?

I respect your post and agree with you free agency is a hit or miss business, my point was lately its been a complete miss when it comes to the corner position. Im not the type of person that wants only big names I was excited about the Bryant pickup and we all know how that turned out.

Is that an indictment of the front office or a weak class of free agents?

Re: Pats sign Deltha O'Neal, release Spach, sign OL Bender and DeVree to practice squ

Tyrone Poole, Otis Smith, Terrell Buckley (nickel). These guys were'nt that bad. It's never as good or as bad as you think it is, it just is what it is.

The problem is, once you develop a reputation as a "genius" or a top talent evaluator, everyone is looking to tear you down, as is the American way. It's easier to take the sports talk radio mentality and harp on the few misses, whether they were egregious or not, and ignore a long string of solid signings. The thing is, everything is approached with the advantage of hindsight during these criticisms, instead of looking at how much sense the move made before the result was known. Duane Starks still doesn't bother me - a 3rd round pick for a guy who was a pro-bowl level talent with the Ravens and had been mired on a bad Cardinals team seems like a reasonable risk to me, like trading a 4th rounder for Randy Moss did. Starks didn't pan out, so in hindsight I wish they hadn't done it, but I'm fine with it, because it made sense at the time. The moves deserving of being questioned are the ones that don't make sense when they occur - and there have been very, very few of those during Belichick and Pioli's tenure. Even if you take their track record as a whole, there are by far a majority of success stories. For every Duane Starks, Monty Beisel or Donald Hayes, there's twice over guys like Corey Dillon, Mike Vrable or Rodney Harrison, guys that delivered championship-caliber play. Until the team starts really floundering, I'll live with the fact that scouting is an inexact science, predicated as much on a player's desire to excel as on his identifiable talents. The fact that the Patriots have had so many success stories only being able to evaluate one side of that equation earns them a lot of leeway for the foreseeable future.

The best free agent cornerback was Tyrone Poole. He was quite

good until he was injured.
