Since Our coach clearly doesn't care about Exhibition Games then We shouldn't either.I have felt for a very long time that The NFL has been perpetrating "Comsumer Fraud" in forcing Season Ticket Holders to pay full price for these "Practices"It was far worse years ago when We had to sit through 6 of these practices.Bill doesn't care and He showed it.The NFL Owners are stealing money and they should be called on it !

I think Bill does care a LOT about preseason games..I think he would certainly fight it if the leagie wished to reduce them to 2...he doesn't care about winning THAT is really not the focus of teh preseason games..It is to look at situations, players and a lot of evaluation and such..but he cares dearly about the, just not in the W/L sense.

On WEEI last week he made it clear he really doesn't care per se. Said the preseason is too long for vets and could be longer for youngsters. It's just more reps in a game time atmosphere that pretty much benefits guys who are not going to get many if any in the regular season barring injury.

It certainly places players at risk in a situation where their salary is not guaranteed, and that is likely on the minds of lots of players not clawing for a job - which is hopefully the bulk of your pre season roster. Some vets go balls to the wall irrespective, and if they get hurt in the process the whole team suffers (see for example Welker, Wes...).

Re: If Bill Doesn't Care About Preseaon Games...

What do we have that tells us Bill doesn't care at all about preseason games - other than those on this board who tell us this? He might not care about all 4 games but he clearly has cared in the past about the middle two.

The Pats typically play their starters in the middle two games and they play their key guys in their special teams roles. There are many teams that do less of that in the preseason than BB does. The Pats have been nothing short of totally dominant when the starters have been on the field in the 3rd preseason game in recent years.

The BB doesn't care about them at all seems to be a rationalization on this board that has developed for the poor play of the first teamers these last 2 weeks.

Certainly he isn't concerned over wins and losses and he doesn't risk players with the injuries. Neither of those is particularly unique in the NFL.

I gotta agree here because we know what he can do and we know the position is fraught with risk. Ditto Hobbs and Faulk. We really should be looking for guys who fit a backup role or two who shine on ST and the return game. Knowing that if something happens to them we have starters who can step in and handle the job...

Re: If Bill Doesn't Care About Preseaon Games...

Maybe you should've sent Bill a text message before the game about this. Then he could've told Brad that it was a bad idea to give Wes a look at returns because patsgo said it was a dumb idea and there was a slight chance he might get hurt. In fact, sit everyone and just let the Eagles pretend their playing us.

Isn't that what kinda happened anyway?

I don't agree, you don't agree, but this is standard operating procedure for BB in the preseason. This year it was Welker getting hurt on ST. A couple years back it was Vrabel when they were trying to convert him to ILB.

At least for the first half, but you know that BB is going to put starters in at some point here and there just to give them reps. and that probably would've been the only time Welker was used in that situation. It just happened to be the one where he gets hurt, besides Wes should've signaled a fair catch anyways. While I was not impressed with the Pats play last night and really thought there would be more emphasis placed on winning, I just can't seem to shake this crazy little feeling in my gut that just seems to trust Bill to handle this team. Call it intuition or call it crazy, but something tells me this team will be ready to open up on KC come opening day.

The emphasis for Bill is on execution in a myriad of personnel packages. If they do that they win, but winning is never his goal in pre season - it's improving execution. And that can happen in game or after reviewing film. If he cared about winning in the preseason he would game plan for that and waste his time. He kinda wants them to face adversity in this period, he will scheme to help them avoid it come week 1. And the newer additions will learn to value the scheme because they have seem what happens absent it.

So what position were we teaching Welker to play last night that required live game reps?

Some things you do are born of necessity. This wasn't...

My post wasn't clear.

Vrabel got hurt covering punts that year early in the preseason and missed time delaying his move to ILB until later in the season.

Hobbs returned kicks and Welker returned punts. BB plays his guys in the preseason in their ST roles if they are healthy. He always has. A lot of his peers don't.

It flies in the face of the conventional wisdon around here that BB doesn't care about the preseason.

Nice summation. Now if only the doomsayers could understand this, they would save themselves a lot of anxiety during this preseason.

Re: If Bill Doesn't Care About Preseaon Games...

He cares about reps and productive reps, not winning. That said, he can be stubborn about that attitude that says football players play football. It's a positive sign that he isn't taking that tack with Tommy this preseason, as he has in blowouts in other seasons that both wore him down, exposed him to injury needlessly, and limited reps for guys who really needed them...

He needs to put Welker and Hobbs and Faulk on that list of risk/reward reps that Tommy is on.

Re: If Bill Doesn't Care About Preseaon Games...

Does Bill care about poor tackling? Does Bill care about the O Line not opening any holes? Does Bill care about poor special teams coverage? Does Bill care that his supposed backup quarterback can't run a team? These are just some of the things he'll see on film. But then again, if he doesn't care, maybe he won't even watch the film, right?

Do you honestly think if Brady did not have an injury that he would not be playing?? I think some reps..not a whole lot..but some..so teh offense could get in synch for a few series at least..

If Brady did not have an injury and he played behind this line testing roster players and personnel groupings and we lost him for substantial time when it matters you would all be calling for Kraft to fing a rational HC... I think Tom's psyche hurts more than his foot right about now. I know he wants to play, even if he is dinged a little, but playing with this mishmash would be folly at 110%...

I have a feeling Bill believes Neal and/or Light will return in 16 days or so. KC may be the preseason game for Brady and his metaphors.

That was on Welker completely. It makes no sense to try to run that kick back given that it angled him all the way to the far sideline and hang time put the coverage right on him. Stupid play.

Thing is Bill knows this kid well enough now to realize that he only plays one way - like the season is on the line and his hair is on fire. Part of a HC's job is to protect these guys from themselves.
