Anyone else thinking about a trade for a Tampa QB??

If you really feel that we MUST have a vet backup, I'd rather have BB pick of the phone and call Testeverde or Bledsoe. Those guys come for free (no draft picks lost) and could probably do just as good a job if they were ever needed.

I want to see more of Gutierez and O'Connell before deciding how screwed we are at backup QB.

I've seen enough of Cassel though.

Bledsoe looked exponentially worse than Cassel the last time he backed up Brady. And worse yet the last time he started for Dallas. And he retired because he has no interest in being a backup. Flutie retired because he had no interest in being an emergency 3rd string QB, which is what he was to Cassel by the end of 2005. Testaverde retired because in Carolina he finally painfully came to the conclusion that he can't get anything done any more.

All that said, it is hard for me to imagine that any of those guys could have played worse than Cassel did last night.

I know that I would feel a lot better with Testaverde as the backup this year. Although I need to see more of the other two backup (preferably in the first half) before I completely give up on our current backups.

They drafted that guy from San Diego that they will be keeping, that makes 4. My guess is they cut Simms(I dont want him anyways) and may explore a trade for Griese/Mcknown. If its not too $$ why not??
Gruden prefers veterans at QB; the rookie from San Diego will end up on their PS. I don't think they want to trade either Griese or McCown. They'll try to trade Simms (maybe to Dallas?) and if they can't get anything for him he'll be released in the last round of cuts. Simms has other issues - lots of passes tipped or batted down at the line of scrimmage, poor decision making under pressure, and too many turnovers; I'd rather not waste a draft pick on him.

Griese is a drunk. Doesn't anyone remember his circus dog pushing him down a flight of stairs?

Just one of many such instances that Griese tried to explain away with some absurd excuse instead of just admitting he is a drunk and hurt himself in a drunken stupor.

I wouldn't want him on the Patriots.

These are football players first, citizens second. Shoot, our right T was caught with over 200 "synthetic heroin" pills(oxys)....I will take a drinker any day to a drug addict/dealer.

Can you just imagine what they would do to Jeff Garcia on the Whiner Line?

They are a defending division champion (albeit by default in a fraudulent division) with a starting QB who now routinely gets hurt if opponents (or his teamates in practice) look at him harshly. Gruden will not entertain a trade of either of Griese (whom they just traded for in March) or McCown because his job is on the line. Simms would make Cassel's critics miss him. Bill is never going to trade for a veteran backup at this juncture. Tried that with a veteran WR two years ago and got burnt for a 5th. Those who are available have been for some time now and offer no improvement absent a full off season and less than no improvement absent it.

All of the QB's would likely look better in a functional offense. We don't have that at the moment because as they say it all starts and ends in the trenches, and our trenches are preseason crapholes due to injury. It's limiting our ability to run vs. first string defenses, and that puts the QB at a distinct disadvantage. Could Brady make more of it? Since he's a HOF'er probably yeah. But he could also get killed. Cassel is basically taking one for the team (and The Franchise...) in the interim.

You said it better than I could... [But he could also get killed. Cassel is basically taking one for the team (and The Franchise...)]

Cassel has auditioned O linemen and I think he found a RG. John Wellbourne, the ex KC regular, is a more than suitable RG for the 2008 Pats, until Neal returns. Britt is proving an adequate replacement for Light.

Can you clarify?

This is going to sound like a troll statement, and I'm not completely serious, but I was envious of Tampa's #3 RB, never mind their #3 QB. I was asking myself why we never seem to have a RB on the roster that can break tackles ( Dillon excluded)

You're kidding right?

I would take Kevin O'Connell over any one of those TB stiffs.
