Guess the anger therapy didn't really work out, huh, Brit, ya cute little muffin you! What a meaningful and well-thought out response. You're in midseason form already!

Thanks for trolling me, btw. I love that you care! We've always had that, haven't we, babe?

i always knew our defense was not physical but this is ridiculous. the bucs were running all over our first string defense. no wonder toomer said after the super bowl that we weren't a physical team. i've been saying we need to get tougher on D for months and people on this board made fun of me with the usual "what are you talking about. we were one fluke play from winning the super bowl" nonsense.

it's obviously only preseason but tampa bay's oline just looked a lot bigger and tougher than our dline.

Ah, the ad hominem attack, a clear sign that the original argument was baseless.

Seriously, it's the second preseason game. It's going to be a long year because the Patriots will be going deep into the postseason again, not because the defense is going to magically start sucking.

That quote sums it up right there, doesn't it? We're just getting pushed around by Tampa. They are doing whatever they feel like doing. Running backs breaking tackles left and right.

Lots of work to be done with this unit and little time to do it!

Our defense got destroyed against the Bengals 4 years ago. Guess what we did that season? We won the superbowl.

Relax. It's preseason. We've haven't looked good in the preseason for some time, including last year. (and look what we did then?)

Well, if we're gonna go "ad hominem", Brit is certainly a fine subject in that he basically LIVES in that arena! LOL!

But, seriously, I do not wish to avoid the original argument by resorting to character-smearing of my opponent, I only wish to point out, that right now, in game two of the pre-season, first-team vs. first-team, our friggin' defense is horrible!

Not sure an opposition view can even exist if we're all watching the same game, but whatever.

Seriously. This happens every year. Every freaking year, without fail. The team plays like crap in the preseason because they're working on specific situations, all the nervous nellies crap themselves on the board in response, the sane members tell them to stop being stupid, the regular season starts and the Patriots win a lot. Then all the nervous nellies whine about every little thing that goes wrong during the season, no matter how insignificant, and finally do their best to avoid eating crow before the whole thing starts over again next season.

If some want to think it's about that, fine.

I am just watching THIS game right now TONIGHT and saying that right now TONIGHT our defense sucks.

I'll let you know how they look next week or in week 7 or week 13 or the playoffs, when those events happen.

I can't observe or comment on those. They haven't happened yet.

By the way, have you ever actually eaten crow? It is really quite tasty. Pan seared with a little garlic and rosemary. Richard Seymour cooked some up for me two seasons ago!

The defense went south today because we are playing a sift zone defense.

As long as Mayo is on the field, the run defense will suffer until he learns how to get off a block.

At this point I would not mind seeing Woods start on the outside and Thomas start next to Bruschi.

Preseason. The key word there is preseason. Yes, our defense looks atrocious. It is both missing starters and playing an entirely vanilla scheme. Additionally, the veterans are largely going through the motions, and treating the game like what it is, a tune-up. I've said it multiple times now, but I'll say it again - this happens every year. Belichick just doesn't approach these games like contests, but as practices and teaching tools. They're nothing more than glorified scrimmages, used to work on game situations. If this continues to the first real game, and Larry Johnson runs all over us, then there will be a reason to panic. But I wouldn't count on that happening.

yeah i was thinking the same thing. wasn't that the game where belichick took out the starters early, put the second string in and then put the starters back in in the third quarter? then they continued to get their butts kicked lol.

it's just that when i saw the bucs driving on our D in the first quarter, it reminded me of last year at times when our D was not physical enough and were getting pushed around a bit. the games from last year that come to mind are the colts, ravens, eagles and giants.

Some people have no memory.. They went 0-4 in pre-season in 2004... And what? they went 14-2 and won the SB...

Same training camp it is the same thing...

I'll totally agree that they're terrible tonight - but why then, would you say that we Patriots fans are in for a long season? Like winning 12+ games is going to be so painful or something. Unless you're predicting, based on what you've seen tonight, that these struggles will happen during the season.

I'd have to go back and check it, but I am pretty sure I said "might". Intentionally. As in, "might" or "might not". Naturally, my hope is "might not".

BTW, but I do love your ad hominem reference. Were you ever on a debate team? I ask because that is where I learned about the concept of the ad hominem argument, position and attack.

And Armen, what I'm saying is that tonights performance says very very little about our defenses performance in the regular season...so that connections like the ones you have been making about preseason and the regular season are simply unwarranted.

The Patriots were 1-3 in 2004 preseason - NOT 0-4

I gotcha. No argument there.
