I'm certainly no fan of the Herald, but I'm impressed any time someone owns up to their mistakes and the publication prints it. Far too few media outlets ever admit they were wrong, and the Herald's front page apology yesterday was truly impressive. I think they will do a much better job vetting stories, especially negative stories, in the future.
See, I think you're COMPLETELY wrong in that assessment. First, the Herald's apology came off as a very insincere apology aimed at nothing more than 1) avoiding a lawsuit, and 2) drawing readers to the story--almost as though they said "ho hum, we got our hand caught in the cookie jar...FINE, we're sorry; is that better?!?"
The WAY it was done--with the full back-page spead, the apology in all caps--it just screamed grandstanding to me. Add to that Tomase's non-apology today (I mean, can't even even say 'I apologize' just once in a letter of apology) and the Herald, in my opinion, couldn't have handled this worse...as though their arm was twisted and they finally gave in and said 'all right, you were RIGHT, we were WRONG...can you let GO ALREADY?'
