Tomase adds an addendum

I'm certainly no fan of the Herald, but I'm impressed any time someone owns up to their mistakes and the publication prints it. Far too few media outlets ever admit they were wrong, and the Herald's front page apology yesterday was truly impressive. I think they will do a much better job vetting stories, especially negative stories, in the future.

See, I think you're COMPLETELY wrong in that assessment. First, the Herald's apology came off as a very insincere apology aimed at nothing more than 1) avoiding a lawsuit, and 2) drawing readers to the story--almost as though they said "ho hum, we got our hand caught in the cookie jar...FINE, we're sorry; is that better?!?"

The WAY it was done--with the full back-page spead, the apology in all caps--it just screamed grandstanding to me. Add to that Tomase's non-apology today (I mean, can't even even say 'I apologize' just once in a letter of apology) and the Herald, in my opinion, couldn't have handled this worse...as though their arm was twisted and they finally gave in and said 'all right, you were RIGHT, we were WRONG...can you let GO ALREADY?'

Sorry Patters, but if you monitored their performance in just the last 48 hours they've already proved that isn't going to happen. But they are apparently counting on the fact that they could sell that rationale to their enough of their demographic...and I guess you're it.

I'd love to be there when Tomase personally apologizes to BB.

Tomase: "Bill, I'm deeply sorry"

Belichick: "Go **** yourself."

And you know---you just KNOW--it's gonna happen this way (or Bill will just refuse to meet with him and freeze him out of all media access with the Patriots).

Basically everything that has happened at the Herald lately has been a result of what is done here and on their site by the fans. They are feeling the heat and they know that they are in trouble. They probably won’t be sued by the Patriots but this one fiasco could spell the beginning of the end. Each of their advertisers have to think about if the stink of this rolls back on them. It does. They already give the Herald away for free in the afternoon in Boston. It won’t take much to put them over the edge.

Wow. A gigantic group of people with absolutely no perspective, no grace and no class. The guy offers up a comprehensive explanation whose very core is infused with apology and regret. He then adds an addendum where he uses words like "sorry" and "apology" and "regret" and NOTHING matters.

I'm not saying that just makes it all okay, it all goes away. But a measure of compassion and taking a freakin' BREATH wouldn't be completely out of line.

Give me a break, I'm really starting to think you are John Tomase.

I'm with BelichickFan, and to quote him: this would be like cheating on you're wife, then saying sorry, what's for dinner.

Nice straw man. This is what I wrote before:

I accept his apology. However, that doesn't mean he and his editors still don't need to feel the reprucusions of their gross negligence. Fines, suspensions, terminations, something. There needs to be some punishment dolled out by the Herald to prove they are serious about the integrity of their newspaper.

But you're right, slam Tomase, who sounds sincerely contrite. You guys are awesome. Your kids are going to be TERRIFIC human beings.

Save your breath and take your head out out of his arse. Come out for a breath. I take severe umbrage with your politicizing this.....

Get a grip and stop distorting the issue for your own personal reasons.

I'm sure there were some well meaning people who thought that after the Herald had to pay a $2 million libel judgement to Judge Murphy three years ago also.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/19/national/19herald.html?pagewanted=print&position=

btw, the Herald appealed that ruling and evidently were so stupid that, not only did they lose the appeal, but the Superior Court Judge tacked on another $1.4 million to it for "interest"!

Patters, this is a repeat offender. If you want to be an enabler, go ahead. But, please, understand about whom you are speaking.

And, btw, what "apology"????? After 3 and 1/2 months of knowing they did not have a DIRECT source they finally ADMITTED to it on Wednesday. At midnight this morning Tomase OUTLINED what happened. The first "apology" from Tomase cam 9 hours later after a flurry of e-mails came in shaming him to apologize to the Krafts, the players, Belichick, etc.

WTF are you talking about. If your buddy comes up to you with COMPLETE SINCERITY and say's. "sorry dude, I banged your wife, but it's okay, I was drunk at the time". Are you gonna say "No sweat buddy, you sure you pulled out though, right". Hell no, you punch the guy in his face.

I DON"T GIVE A **** how sincere he is. HE IS AN AMATEUR and has no business being a reporter, or having our trust anymore for telling us the truth. This apology/explanation proves that.

If you want to forgive him, fine. But the rest of us may not be at that point yet, and don't need you to pander your nose down to us because our anger still exists.

Oh yeah, about your BS comments about our kids. GFY, leave my kids out of it.

Bra-freakin'-VO. What's ironic is that I'm sure a good number of unforgiving posters in this thread are big-time Fox/Rush/Hannity/O'Reilly clones. These people got it wrong (forgiveable-ish, if not for their laziness and desire to carry water for Bush) AND willingly misled, and CONTINUE to mislead, an ignorant audience with crap they KNOW to be false.

But you're right, slam Tomase, who sounds sincerely contrite. You guys are awesome. Your kids are going to be TERRIFIC human beings.

Nice resort to personal attacks. Also nice try to shift the argument. Fox has no journalistic integrity so neither should the Herald! Nice. Well done. Nobody should expect them to be held accountable right?

PS23, the only reason he sounds contrite is he got caught. He's like a 5 year old that got caught stealing cookies. Says he's sorry and even sounds like he it, but as soon as you turn your back he's gonna be back at the cookie jar.

As for the rest of your post, it's political and this isn't the place for it.

Yes, I've read that analogy too. It's RIDICULOUS on its face. That is beyond absurd. It's insane.

You people are either in high school, clinging to the Patriots like they're your F-ing MOMMY, or you're limited on the level of West Virginia voters. Pathetic.

I'm not Tomase, but after this overreach by you guys, I am without question on HIS side. He has behaved with a sense of honesty and integrity, DESPITE EVERYTHING, that you guys simply haven't. He got the story wrong, he made a big mistake, but I believe it was not intentional. YOU, on the other hand, are WAY overstepping anything he did, and you're doing so with intent.

Ironic. You're slamming a guy for having "no cred" and you're doing so with such intensity that YOU now have "no cred." Pathetic.

You keep elluding the question. Where is the accountability?

Compassion for what??? A guy who is only sorry because he rolled the career dice and came up snake eyes? He won't even acknowledge the possibility that he might not have chance to apologize in person because it might not be a widely accepted given that he still has a job or a forum from which to rebuild this trust he assumes he ever had to lose.

You think we have no grace or class, well I think you have no leg to stand on and you're just too arrogant and entrenched and therefore irrational to admit you hitched your wagon to this loser. It's easier to attack the rest of us for calling it like it is than it is to simply admit you too made an oops, my bad - just like your boy.

I don't think Tomasse is sorry at all. I feel he just wants to save his sorry job. Fine. I understand that. I don't wish bad things for him. But neither do I wish good things for him. In all honesty, I could care less about him. That said, there is no way he can stay on the Pats beat. Do you really think that these players are going to give him the time of day? No way. The only answers, if any, he gets to any questions will be a one or two word answer.

If you actually think that's what the analogy meant, I pray for you. Once again a bull-headed type angles for the straw man. An embarrassment.

LOLOLOL! In what WORLD is that a good comparison to what happened???? A lot of you are bringing this up. It's insane. You are RIDICULOUS PEOPLE.

What intensity? Honestly, the only intense person in this debate is you. My feelings on Tomase were best served in another thread when I said "too little, too late, yawn". There's no intensity or anger in me towards him at this point, I'm tired of the story, and I'm also impervious to whatever apologies he's been forced to write. He wrote an absurd and damaging story on absurd premises two days before the Super Bowl. There's no amount of apology or "whoops" that makes up for that. He needs to leave the Pats beat.
