Mods, Please close this thread as there is NO reason for it.

Wow, this thread sure does inspire a lot of hate.
How about this - don't read it.

Uh, no.

In fact, I'd like to throw in my two cents, as I have yet to do so in this thread.

If the Patriots believe that Seward will be an effective rotation-ILB and special teamer for them, I see no reason for not putting out the offer sheet. However, putting together the sheet is the key. Will they use the poison pill? Or, like they did with Welker, will they instead look for a trade and throw in an extra late-round incentive pick for the Panthers' hospitality? Or, is this prolonged wait because the teams are trying to work out a greater draft pick swap, that probably won't happen until draft day?

In any event, let's check out the Patriots' recent 5th round history:

2007 - Clint Oldenburg
2006 - Ryan O'Callaghan
2005 - Ryan Claridge
2004 - P.K. Sam
2003 - Dan Koppen
2001 - Hakim Akbar
2000 - Dave Stachelwski
2000 - Jeff Marriott
1999 - Derrick Fletcher
1998 - Ron Merkerson
1997 - Vernon Crawford
1996 - John Elmore
1996 - Christian Peter
1994 - Pat O'Neill
1993 - Scott Sisson
1993 - Rich Griffith
1992 - Dwayne Sabb
1991 - Jon Vaughn
1991 - Ben Coates

That's quite the murders' row...

I'd trade Seward for any of those, except the ones in bold.

What about #7 for #13, Carolina's 3rd or 4th rounder, and Seward? I'm not much of a "draft value" scholar, but there has been some speculation Carolina would move up, does this suit the pick value gods or is it way too much in our favor? I'm guessing #7 for #13 and Seward isn't quite the value we'd look for, but does an additional mid-rounder work for both sides?

I don't see what the huge deal is. Offer a 5th, the dudes a damn backup is it that big of a deal? They must like the guy if it's so difficult, like Pats said though we just don't know whats going down behind the scenes.

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

I don't know why posters have their panties all in a bunch about this thread.

It's more football related than most.

The Patriots just added the first under 30 LB since 2003 (besides FA
STers). They'll need to add more (Bruschi Seau).

Outside of a little fun (horrors) with the thread title this thread gets bumped because acquiring younger linebackers is a need.

All you haters need to go take a pill.

Ahh, the voice of reason.
This thread is relevant, without question.
Not to mention that BB apparently likes this guy quite a bit.
That, in itself makes it interesting.
And the Carolina coaches like him too.
Compared to many of the threads here, this one is pretty relevant.
Of course, we could have another throwback uniform thread (no offense pat).

Seward is a RFA STer....

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

Seward is a RFA STer....

I doubt they would bother if they thought he was an Eric Alexander.

As a restricted Free agent they would need to give a 5th (his draft position) and make an offer higher than Carolina will match.

You know that's not the same as an undrafted free agent. Why do you bother to post it?

It's not a court of law and posting misleading technicalities doesn't make a point.

Yes, Vrabel was a backup special teamer and RFA. Using your logic, this guy is exactly the same as Vrabel.

You used the argument about previous youth being free agent STers. I simply pointed out that this is what Seward is. It's not as if I was splitting hairs.

He's not a free agent except in a technical sense.

Do we have to pay to get him? Yes.

If we sign him is he ours? No, the other team can match.

He may be a free agent, but he's not a "free" agent.

This is why legal contracts are 20 pages instead of one.
---

Vrabel was also a restricted free agent.

He is like Vrabel.

He is not like Woods or Alexander.

Simple enough?

No. He's a free agent. It has nothing to do with a 'technical sense'. It's a class of free agency, and all your nonsense isn't going to change the CBA.

No, he's a restricted free agent.

A free agent, without the qualifier, is by definition without restrictions

I still have time to edit, do I need to go back to the original and add non-restricted, undrafted, unencumbered, unfettered.

I don't think so, because people never refer to restricted free agents without using the word restricted. They often refer to undrafted or street free agents as such because they fit the definition of the word free.

The word free and the word restricted are antonyms.

Saying a player is a restricted free agent is the same as saying he is not free to sign or to bargain. Because they qualify the word free with a word tht has the opposite meaning.

It is in the category of possible contract situations, grouped together for convenience.

Do you think we should sign some exclusive rights free agents?

If not, why not?

Jeez, 54 pages dedicated to an injury prone linebacker who we haven't even signed yet? Slow offseason much?

54 pages? When you have time, find and click the "User CP" near the top of the page, on the left. Then find and click "Edit Options", about halfway down the column on the left. Then scroll down until you find "Thread Display Options". Using the "Number of Posts per Page" option, you can choose to read the max of 40/page, as I do. That's still 14 pages of posts for this thread, but hey, that's off-season football talk for ya sometimes.

So, in other words, your post was inaccurate because you should have said 'unrestricted free agent' since that's what you meant, and you're now giving me grief because your screw up led to my perfectly logical reply. I'm somehow in error because you messed up your post and I don't have any form of telepathy that works over the internet. How nice.

No one needs the unrestricted unless they're trying to make a technical point.

Everyone, including you, knows what someone means when they say free agent with no qualifier.

You chose to make a technical point by saying a restricted free agent is the same as any free agent.

All I need now is your list of exclusive rights free agents for us to sign.

I don't think other teams know that all free agents are the same yet, so we could get a jump on the competition.

Re: ILB Adam Seward [merged]

Seward is basically an ST guy for a 5th. You can pick up Carpenter for a third who is bigger and faster. He also plays great ST if nothing else. He could start here pretty soon IMO. He is still in the mix for LB in Dallas but is not down one more step as they signed Zach Thomas.
I'd grab him first. Seward is a fall back to Carpenter. I think Al Wilson just turned down a minimum of $663k from the Browns. He wants more than minimum. Would you pay Wilson $1mm and can the Seward experiment? What do you people think of Carpenter or Wilson as better choices?
DW Toys

Are you sure that Carpenter is available for a 3rd-rounder? If Dallas is willing to take #92 (instead of #69), I would seriously consider it. He has the size/speed/strength to play either ILB or OLB, depending on what happens at the draft, with Junior Seau, and during TC.

If Al Wilson is signed (which I don't think will happen), then Junior will not be re-signed. The question is: would I rather have a bigger, healthier, but older Junior; or a faster, younger, but (much?) less healthier Wilson?

My main hesitation in signing Seward is that we would then have zero draft choices between our 4th- and 6th-round picks. Now, had we another 4th-, 5th- or 6th-rounder, via trade or comp, then I would be much less hesitant.

Why would that matter? You don't think we'll have enough low round picks to stock the Jets this year?
