I believe that the 8 million number is not taking into account the Top 51 rule.

The Pats were under the cap by 10.8 million on March 6th. Since then they signed Lewis Sanders, Tank Williams, and Fernando Bryant to vet min deals meaning that the 3 displaced players with $370,000 salaries from the Top 51 list so the net effect of signing the trio was less than $400,000 (490,000 - 370,000)*3.

I have the Pats under the cap by 10.5 million.
There are 8 players not in the Top 51 list.
5 of them have $370,000 salaries
3 of them have $295,000 salaries.

1,850,000 (370,000 *5)
885,000 (295,000 *3)
2,735,000

10.5 million minus 2,735,000 is approximately 8 million.
So, that local writer who covers the Patriots (for a living) was incorrect? He said that was the figure he's been given.

That is what I think.

Based on what I know, I simply do not trust that figure.

I hope you're correct, as his figures would mean the Patriots have around $2.5M less in cap space, and you can sign a decent Mid-level player with that money.

Reuben Frank of Sports Illustrated has the Patriots 2008 Adjusted Salary cap at $119,325,078.

That's around $1.8M off from Miguel's quoted $121,125,078 2008 Adjusted Salary cap.

Also, Jon Scott of Scout.com is reporting both Neal and Koppen have 2008 Cap hits of $3.1M, and the numbers were given to him by an NFL source.

Miguel clearly states that his numbers are estimates. So, what is your point of posting that some no name hack from Scout.com says something that is less than 100K different than what Miguel has on his site? Personally, I'd trust Miguel's numbers over Jon Scott since Miguel's been following them much longer.

As for Reuben Frank, if that is his number, I am pretty sure it contradicts the numbers that were released by the NFL when they made the announcements about the adjusted caps. I'll take the NFL over some SI hack anyday.

FYI - Adjusted cap numbers have changed during the league year in the past and in 2008 two teams saw their adjusted cap numbers changed. One of the teams was the Pats.

Seriously, why do you come off as having an attitude problem so often?

There really isn't any point but to also show board members the same info I sent to Miguel, so he could check it out. You act like I'm saying his Info sucks, or something, which I'm not. Also, that $3.1M quoted by Scott came from an NFL source, and he's actually been covering the NFL (and the Patriots in particular) for some time now. I've been going back and checking his previous info on scheduled pre-draft visits, prospect workouts, and interviews... he actually seems to be among the most accurate professional writers tracking that info. For instance, he talked to Flowers' agent, and found out that Brandon's not coming for a visit, when Reiss had previously reported other wise.

Obviously I don't know how accurate the guy is when it comes to cap info, since (like yourself) I'm not aware if he fallows that info as closely, or if he fully understands all of the dynamics at work. But, there isn't any reason to insult the guy, and it's info worth checking.

Good deal. Obviously writers have been wrong about a number of things in the past, but when I came across that info, I knew it didn't match yours, so I asked.

Are your numbers for Neal and Koppen coming from previous reports, and the the NFLPA's resources? Could there have been any type of workout money, or any other unreported incentives that would have created that small difference? I ask because the reported numbers for other contracts have been off slightly in the past. The other possibility is that NFL source simply rounded up? That would seem stupid, but who knows.

Thanks for replying.

Both. I got my numbers from previous reports and was able to verify them recently with a pretty good source.

Neal had a 100,000 NLTBE incentive in his contract. It was considered NLTBE in early March. Could it now be considered LTBE?? Yes. As far as I know, Koppen does not have any incentives in his contract. Therefore, I can understand being off Neal's number but not Koppen's.

Can you find out what my boss makes?
