So over 1m GTD more overall. 3m more total contract.

It's ridiculous it took them this long - that's spot on with what most of us thought it would be. Slightly more than Witherspoon.

I guess maybe we'll hear that Gonzo was looking for contract kickers to keep him among the highest-paid as future contracts get done. That's the only reason I can think of that this didn't get done long ago.

There's no reason they shouldn't have sealed this deal long ago - it will be interesting to hear later which side might have been holding this up because a contract like that isn't a shocker to anyone.

The Pats did need to sign Gonzo or else. It would have been a turkey shoot rolling into Seattle with Davis as CB1. Gonzo affords the PATS to leave him by himself on any WR1 and roll pass coverage help to other DBs.

The Rams signed McDuffie just to deal with JSN. Who is the next JSN? NE faces elite WRs out the ying - yang this season and the first 4 NE opponents all qualified for the 2025 postseason.

Im assuming the 5 year option from his rookie contract is void and this take effect after this year

I'm pretty sure the $18 mil next year still stands given that this is an extension. The big thing for Gonzo is that he gets $33 mil in a signing bonus this year instead of $3 millon for his salary this year. Plus the $102 guaranteed.

So big difference for him playing for $3 million and risking $102 million. I wouldn't have faulted him for sitting, although I don't think he would have for Game 1. Glad this is done. No reason they can't renegotiate later when they are trying to extend Maye as well, but I think this is designed to have no dead money after Year 4 so they can make a clean cut without cap implications if he's not lived up to the contract - and take the additional extension if he is.

That “early vesting” sounds like the odd-man out text aka indicator of what the lengthy delay was all about.

Note that owners need to place the amount of any guarantees in an escrow account when the contract is signed.
The player obviously doesn't receive that money, and the owner can earn some interest on it, but that's what makes it guaranteed.
Not just guaranteed whether the player performs or not, but guaranteed whether the owner loses it all in crypto.
"Cash budget" - this will require about $100M cash paid into escrow now. And assume another $300M or whatever next year.

His ability to run with his man while keeping his eye on the ball is outstanding - he'd be getting pass interference calls if he didn't, but he's got the same right to the ball by tracking it.

One doesn't have to have the most INTs to be elite like that.

From the looks of the Gonzo deal both sides won. Gonzo got what he is worth, but its not a deal that cripples the Pats. The deal has 50 + Mil in backloaded salary in the final years.
