It could be that they're not sure how long the injuries will keep them out. @ctpatsfan77 mentioned that the DTR for players yesterday was automatic. Whereas, players IRed today, it's not. So the Pats may be keeping their options open with the remaining 7 DTR slots.

I'm sorry if you understood it that way, but that's not what I meant. If teams want to bring back a player placed on IR on cutdown day, they have to use the DTR designation that day. But they're not required to use the DTR tag on such players if they know they won't be ready this season (e.g., ACL tears).

For players placed on IR after cutdowns, they can wait until the player is ready to start practicing.
