The Initial 53 Man Roster

It was drilled into me that UDFA's rarely if ever make an NFL roster, yesterday three did

The exact discussion that was "drilled into you" was UFA's rarely make an impact as a position player.

Evidently it wasn't drilled enough.

Let's see how many snaps these three take over the season before victory laps.

I think a lot of the panic comes from watching 3 dogshit preseason games. Gotta realize 90% of the snaps were played by guys who will not be on any NFL roster in week 1.

It was drilled into to you that between all the players and rookies brought in at ILB they would find some capable backups.

It was drilled into me that UDFA's rarely if ever make an NFL roster, yesterday three did... including Khalil Jacobs beating out Muma at ILB and Obiazor of course made the roster.

All in all ILB looks pretty good, but I just read Owen Pappoe got cut in Arizona, Liked the look of the rookie, so I might bring him in if they think they're "thin." But the coaches don't seem to be concerned about it at ILB, they seem to like the group.
ILB does not look "pretty good." It looks pretty much the same as last year. Spillane goes down...I expect effort and not much else.

Pappoe is a 4th year player.

you need a different drill to get through Wozzy's thick skull

With the Pats playing the earliest Week 1 game, they will be in prime position to sign a veteran UFA before the rest of the league even plays game 1! I'm thinking KVN would be a decent add.

These players are all developmental like Crownover, Morton, Taylor.

That's the direction the team went. And I agree.

But that's a long way from positional backups. which is what the discussion was.

OB and Jacobs could be good over time. they both fly around the field.
but a rookie flying all over tends to make lots of mistakes.
ST could be where they find a game day active spot.
Britt made some plays over the summer, but I assume they are looking hard at both ILB and edge right now

really, for me "depth" comes down to when is a developmental player going to be ready, vs how much upside does the vet have.
some of these developmental players more than likely are a year away, but worth the wait?
Crownover, Morton, OB, Jacobs included.

This is where practice squad callups, which posters have been saying is made up, come into play.

The Bills rostered just three corners.

This is a league wide strategy. I'm surprised many on this board are not aware.

No, that was you moving the goalposts after I showed you how a quarter of NFL active rosters were made up of UDFA's.

A completely different group isn't "the same as last year."

They have younger fresher legs and more athleticism with Obi and Jacobs. Obi played his way onto the roster in that last preseason game. Jacobs name kept popping up in camp reports all preseason. Britt provides them with a solid tackler and special teams player. All in all, pretty good.

Jacobs made the 53 man roster, that's three UDFA's who made the roster. You told me that never happens.

Show me where I said that never happens.

The discussion was about backups for Spillane and Ellis.

How does it help us with that if Jacobs becomes a position in three years?

You've celebrated that fact enough.

The Pats had DaQuan Jones and Shaq Thompson in for a tryout a couple of weeks ago. I assume it is those two.

The Patriots made the Super Bowl with four rookie starters and about 8 rookies total playing roles on the team. A year later UDFA Ponder is starting at OLB.

If you're afraid of rookies, you're watching the wrong league.

I suspect that Vrabel was content with the competition he held for backup CB. Obviously, he'll sign an upgrade if he finds one at the right price (same as any position but QB), but I don't see it happening.

Our situation at EDGE is truly sad.
We are counting on Ponder to start.
Our backups (Jacas and Hutchins) don't belong on the field at this point.
Besides being shocked by the RB cuts/additions, this is my biggest concern. And has been since March.
Hutchins over Swinson was a shock to me. Hutchins didn't even play on the Edge hardly all in the preseason did he?? Or, that's how invisible he was! I assume Swinson will be saved on the PS, but really surprising that this is the DE corp they're entering a season with.
I'm hoping they're planning something for a legit vet to come in.

You drilled it into our head it never happens... despite factual data about UDFA's in the NFL.

Jacobs is there right now.

Ponder is actually a perfect example.
the first 6 games, he averaged 5 defensive snaps per game, with 2 games listed as DNP
he is the perfect example of a developmental player not ready early in the season
thank you

interestingly, per Mark Daniela Larison was on the 53 man roster, until the trade for Rouse
