Patriots Trading For RB Corey Kiner (2028 7th rounder)

A 7th rounder allows you to choose any potential undrafted free agent
We just traded that 7th rounder for a UDFA that has been in the league for two years.

Which has more value, a rookie UDFA with no NFL experience, or a two year NFL veteran who was a UDFA?
More valuable than random jags off the scrap heap.
You think a scratch off ticket that hasn’t been scratched is more valuable than one that only won a couple of bucks, right?

But a 7th is still very low pct.

We know he's a guy who would have been cut off a bad team.

But they must be desperate, and feel he's the best option open.
I don’t think it’s desperation. I think it’s an upgrade, for minimal cost.

Bad teams make bad decisions. I don’t know how deep the Cardinals RB depth might be, but Kiner has been in the league for two years so the Patriots have a good book on him.

We will see how well he does, but for now it looks like a couple of our questions about RB have been answered. RB3 will be Kiner. Most likely Larison, Jam, and perhaps Haskins will end up on our PS. I think that’s stronger than we were before this trade.

Lol ya we gave up a truckload in this trade. That 7th rounder is equal to a first. Lol. This guy is different than Larison - totally different skill set. You cited Kiner's height but not his weight? Why? Because it undermines your complaint. He weighs 209lbs, which makes him a bowling ball. This is the guy who rams under the line to get the tough yards and runs out the 4th quarter so you can save Rham. Jam is the same kind of back, but I think his injury is worse than expected. Larison is not this type of runner at all. Kiner saves the late game hits on Rham and Trey.
My sentiments exactly.
You nailed what Kiner's role will be, what Jam's might have been, and what Larison's role never would've been!

I'm guessing the rbs in that room are sweating a bit right now.
No, they’ve read the handwriting on the wall and already know. Nothing left to sweat about.

And there is the KEY point. Special Teams. We've heard Vrabel say, repeatedly, he wants the ball in the hands of a RB on kick-offs. Granted, Kiner wasn't exactly making a splash as a college kick returner, Not nearly what Larison did. But he's got some experience.

With there being a question as to Jam Miller's health, I think this is a decent pick-up. A guy who can take 5-6 hand-offs game to give Henderson and Stevenson a rest while doing the kick-offs.

It should be noted that Kiner had 4.8 YPC behind Arizona's O-line last year.

I had posted that we might need to trade picks to get players that might be cut, to get a jump on them being claimed or by having to compete with others.

A 2028 7th is a bargain. And, yes, last year we likely would have waited and have expected to claim Kiner.

I know nothing about him other than what I read, but things like
uncanny contact balance
bouncing of tacklers
never goes down on first contact
Those are exactly the type of things I want to hear about an early down backup RB.

IMO, the patriots are doing OK with late additions

OUT: Boutte, 2028 7th
IN: Van Roten, Reed, Conley, Haack, Kiner

I think that we might have to part with a 6th if we want a contributing ILB or EDGE player. We'll see

Or a "short yardage back" That isn't named Gilliam

Why are you assuming that Conley is staying? Conley was on and off the Pats PS a couple times. Then on the Lions PS before being cut then on the Browns PS where he earned a Future's contract. Which was short-lived since he was cut twice by the Browns before re-signing back with the Pats.

Conley is as likely to be cut as any other of the bottom of the roster guys.
