He can indeed "walk back" from a statement, a promise, he never made.

More broadly, the ongoing accusation in some quarters that Kraft is cheap is asinine, erroneous, and more than slightly fishy given the sad history of his tribe.

we have no details on the offer, making the statement meaningless.

right now, Gonzo is signed to essentially a 2/$20m deal fully guaranteed.
he has in theory $100m+ guaranteed on the table on a new deal.
if he injures before signing, he risks losing $100m+.

Unless something else came out....they didn't say they intended to make him the highest paid....they said they made him an offer that would make him the highest paid.

Now that was a couple of weeks ago, the number has changed we'll see if they want to move off the current offer or not.

The problem here is that Gonzalez is reportedly channeling Curtis Martin and could be challenging the salaries of other players. For the ones that don’t know, reportedly Martin felt he was just as valuable if not more than Drew Bledsoe.

Jalen Carter has obliterated the DT market at $38M. Carter is a good player, but come on.

Drake London and Zay Flowers at $35M per year. Good players, but should not be within the top 4.

JSN at $42M per year and Gonzo was shutting him down before he left in the Super Bowl.

Surtain is also rumored to get a market correction contract. Gonzalez may wait for that to know what his ceiling is.

Much as I like Gonzalez if he wants 40 per then the Patriots should play hardball with him and tell him he will have to play out his contract before a new deal is reached.
