OT: Sean Payton Planned to Step Aside for Belichick to coach Denver to Break Win Record

Just like when he had Ghostowski kick the FG in XLII? Oh no wait instead he went for it on 4th and 10 and the pats lost by a FG.
Typically, BB had a good reason to stray from the norm.

The game that I was referencing is only 180 degrees different than what you decided to drag up. Starting with a back up QB who saw virtually 0 action the entire 2025 season. See for yourself https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/StidJa00.htm Furthermore, the weather in the 2nd half of the 2025 AFCC impacted playing conditions, but Payton ignored the forecast.
Of the Denver game in the AFC Championship where he went on 4th down 3 times in a row in the 4th qtr when kicking the FGs would have resulted in a win.
Its easy to go back now and shoulda, coulda, woulda.

Was there a head wind? Pats Kicker dinged up or under the weather?
Dont assume Bill always takes the points because he hasn't in times past.
BB took the points the vast majority of the time.

Dont try to make it like he did not with BS.

I would have loved to see BB coach another NFL team after the Patriots.

Wickersham has less credibility than John Tomase

Loved Bill and everything he did here but I think that would of been a disastrous circus. Favre giving Strahan the sack the record comes to mind from just the thought. Just dirty, as I much as I detested Shula and his holier than though antics, I wouldn’t want Bill getting the record that way.
When fairytales produce real feelings. I love this place for the natural drama.

I call BS. The players wouldn’t buy in to something like that. That would have also been a great way to put a big fat asterisk on that record and Bill knows it. I don’t think he would have agreed to such an arrangement.

Then again if Shula was still here I think Bill should do it. Lol

I wrote that BB would take the points with an approaching blizzard and a back up QB who sucks at best.

Never stated that BB always takes the points.

If AV was still on the roster I have no doubt they elect to kick instead of going for it on 4th and 13.

Bill said he thought they needed TDs not FGs to win that game. I would have kicked anyway. To be fair if they kicked the FGs we can't assume the rest of the game would have played out like it did with the Pats scoring a very late TD.

If BB did this it would be more embarrassing than going 0-fer at NC...

I hope this is just a fever dream from Payton, and that BB had nothing to do with it...

BB usually had a reason when he strayed from protocol.

BB put the ball in Bradys hands.

If the play worked then BB is a genius and Brady the most clutch QB of all time as they both go down in history.

Ya know, I considered saying **** You, Seth Wickersham.

And, ya know, I decided to say **** You, Seth Wickersham.

So here it is: **** You, Seth Wickersham!

Yes, I feel better now.

Poor Sham. I mean, what's in a name?

It's all invalid after "considered" and "Wickersham."

But, just to play along, it seems the thought was to make Belichick the de facto DC but with a sham HC title.

There is no way this was more than dumb drunken musings. Would have been a total clown show.

When BB took the Browns job, Sam Wyche was the Cincinnati HC and he called BB offering his expertise and help. BB basically told Wyche to go shove it.

This story reeks of the same.

I didn't realize this was buried in the Bill megathread. Since it's relatively interesting - given the period we're in currently - I'll leave this thread open.

H/T to @h0c2000 for the dead horse reaction, which helped me locate the other posts, which I've now moved those posts into this one.

@Ian, There's been some rumors being reported that you are going to step aside and let me be the site admin until I break the Internet. Any truth to those rumors?
