OT: Sean Payton Planned to Step Aside for Belichick to coach Denver to Break Win Record

Seth Wickersham posted an interesting story on Tuesday where he spent time with Sean Payton, documenting things in Denver.

"Payton and Belichick go back decades, forged by mutual respect -- and mutual trauma from working under Parcells. When Belichick and the Patriots divorced in 2024, Payton considered presenting Broncos owner Greg Penner a proposal for the ages: Hire Belichick as head coach until he reached 15 wins, enough to break Don Shula's career record of 347. Payton would temporarily step down to assistant head coach and run the offense, then move back after Belichick became the all-time leader. In the end, it was too complicated -- and maybe too fanciful."

Definitely interesting. The whole article was interesting if you enjoy long-form reads, but that tidbit certainly stood out and is starting to circulate online.

I don't know if I believe that one. Lol
I believe the part where it was just 'too complicated' is credible but there's no 'maybe' about it being too (ahem) "fanciful"

The key word is "considered"...

We all consider all kinds of things. Bill actually followed through with Jordon. Maybe he should have considered a few more things before he did that.

Congrats to BSPN and Wickersham for creating yet more click bait.

I was actually CONSIDERING going back to @Ian ’s OP and clicking the link, but then you reminded me that Wickersham, who is often FANCIFUL when it comes to facts; is the author and I decided that it was way too COMPLICATED to find a way to read it without giving click credit.

Coaching college is like a dream come true for Bill. Too bad it was a nightmare.

Saw a comment elsewhere that said it best - something along the lines of "I also considered dating Sydney Sweeney, but ultimately, it was too complicated."

I didn't realize this was buried in the Bill megathread. Since it's relatively interesting - given the period we're in currently - I'll leave this thread open.

H/T to @h0c2000 for the dead horse reaction, which helped me locate the other posts, which I've now moved those posts into this one.

Loved Bill and everything he did here but I think that would of been a disastrous circus. Favre giving Strahan the sack the record comes to mind from just the thought. Just dirty, as I much as I detested Shula and his holier than though antics, I wouldn’t want Bill getting the record that way.

That UNC QB last season was god awful, but I read that UNC has a better guy for this season.

It was unrealistic to believe that BB would roil into Chapel Hill and take the Tarheels to the BCS first season.

This would have been worth it just to get the popcorn out for the reactions from fans of other teams, especially Miami/Shula fans. "This isn't a legitimate record!" "It needs to have an asterisk next to it!" "Where the f is Goodell?! He needs to put a stop to this!" "Belichick can't do anything honestly!" The heart attacks and drama would have been gold.

Well now, how fun would that have been....

BB is old skhool and he wouldnt want to win like that.

Ill Guarantee you 2 things. If he was HC of Denver last AFCC BB would take the points and not gamble with Stidman and he would have known treacherous weather conditions were in the forecast.

Just like when he had Ghostowski kick the FG in XLII? Oh no wait instead he went for it on 4th and 10 and the pats lost by a FG.

Of the Denver game in the AFC Championship where he went on 4th down 3 times in a row in the 4th qtr when kicking the FGs would have resulted in a win.

Dont assume Bill always takes the points because he hasn't in times past.
