The Coaching Staff

2 years perhaps.
but a good HC hire comes with "who are you bringing".
we saw first hand with Mayo, if the answer is "no one"...it will be a bad hire.
my assumption is that someone like Kuhr, today, is connected with a couple of the Pats defensive staff who feel they need a change/are blocked. in an offensive league, much, much more is needed.

I thought Bill's demise was related to his unwillingness to expand his staff to new ideas. by maintaining a small staff season over season, the pipeline was thin. at the end, we saw friends, relatives and sons of friends on staff. thinking back on it, why wasn't Vrabel on staff post Titans?
He did keep a small staff ill give ya that

the next time Bill listens to an owner on how to run his team, will be the first time.
that's paraphrased from Bill as well
Owners should hire wisely, like Bob did with Parcells, Belichick and Vrabel… then they should shut up, sign the checks and get out of the way.

Jonathan tried to be an Owner/GM like Al Davis… it failed terribly.

Tuning yet another thread into BB bashing, eh?

This thread started as an appreciation of the quality of our present coaching staff. Why make it about your desire to bash Bill? Does that really make you feel better than appreciating our present team of coaches?

Your monthly reminder that Bill Belichick was fired in January, 2024. Nearly 2 1/2 years ago.
The Patriots have had 2 head coaches, and even made a Super Bowl since then.

Yet, here we are.

We have a damn good staff and shouldn't have to worry about the core of it going anywhere. Going to assume that Williams is happy with Vrabel and doesn't want to take on the physical stress of more responsibility. No way McD gets another HC opportunity - though I have some gripes about his lack of adjustments down the stretch last season, hopefully he can still learn some new tricks/make some changes at this point in his career. If we have the success we're hoping for the next few seasons, Vrabel and co will still need to start scouting around and making connections in preparation for some of the other guys getting poached.

I maintain among the numerous problems/shortcomings Mayo may have had, his biggest downfall was his inability to construct a competent staff
IIRC, Kraft directed Mayo to keep some of BBs guys because Bob would have had to still pay them if they moved on.

I also wonder how many coaches didnt want to gamble on a HC who had almost zero NFL coaching experience.

That may also have been compensation for Mayo’s total lack of any recruiting network.

Especially if they didn’t know him and nobody had everdworked with or for him.

Jonathan and Wolf wanted the West Coast system, Bill called the system “easy to defend” but he tried to play along with Jon and Wolfie. He made a half hearted attempt and gave up because it was a stupid idea.

The issue with the EP system is that it puts enough of a burden on pass catchers that many of them never grasp it. Reports had it that one of the jobs Josh's assistants had last year was simplifying it to make it more receiver-friendly.

Nobody wanted to come to the Pats when Mayo was hired. Those stories from the candidates where Mayo talked about anything other than football was wild.

Then Vrabel hires coaches with ease in 2025. Now a guy like Kuhr are starting to become a name where McDaniels is rehabbing his image.

I don’t remember the reports of potential staff members mentioning there was no football chatter during meetups. Geniunely curious if someone / you could elaborate.

Orthwein hired Parcells

I agree Van Pelt and Covington did not have extensive successful coaching history and seem to be guys that the Pats has to "settle" on. Consider our current coaching staff who all seem to have wanted to work with Vrabel.

yes, agree
a poster above called it bashing Bill, but it is not
it is just so different than Bill
we had 20 great seasons with Bill (a couple not so great) and he did things so differently than what we saw last season, and so far this season.
it is so different to see so many different coaches here from other org's and coaching philosophies.

It's been talked about here before, but it's too difficult to dig up the exact articles or quotes. Once too much time passes, articles disappear into the black hole of the internet. Here's the best of what I could find:

Kuhr has two experienced DCs as assistants, Williams and now Bowen. He’s got solid support to ensure his success. And if (when) he gets poached his replacement is likely already on board. Probably Bowen.

Kuhr a DC now, can only be poached for a HC opportunity.

IMO it was a Vrabes CHOICE.

He was traded and saw another coaches way of doing business. He was ambitious for a coaching career and that trade helped him see (let him know) he needed to learn from as many pipelines as possible AS WELL AS make those CONNECTIONS ( that Mayo never had) with folks across the league so that when he got a DC or HC job folks didn’t say WHO? when he called them.

In short, I think he planned his coaching career with a lotta forethought.
