Kraft: The Patriots want to play a game in Scotland

Yaaass. Would absolutely love this. Murrayfield Stadium in the capital, Edinburgh, or Hampden Stadium in Glasgow, would be absolutely rocking for this. There are many of us Pats fans in Scotland.
Do you reckon that the stadium would sell out?

I suppose Irish and English fans would attend too.

Looks like Murray seats about 68,000 and Hampden about 52,000.

You get Haggis at Murray too.

You are kidding, right?

I believe that all NFL games in Europe have sold out. Sometimes there 5 or 10 times as many fans wanting tickets as available tickets.

I have exactly zero question that fans from Scotland alone would immediately sign up for far more tickets than available, probably in a hours after release.

Posters here may really hate the idea of NFL games in Europe (or in South America).

But, make no mistake, these games are very, very popular. The open question is how many games a year would Europe support with sellouts.

As many countries as there are in Western Europe.

perhaps, I suspect that the leagues want to regularize play at least 1 game per team per year.

I suspect that Ireland, Scotland and England would like support a couple of game each. They might even support enough game to support an AFCE team.

Nope NFL London Games An Expense Too High For Many - The Touchdown

If what you claim is fact then the NFL is sleeping at the wheel expanding the league across the Atlantic. Teams in Scotland , Ireland and England would be instant success.

The games ALL initially sell out, but the question is what % of that is the ticket agencies with 50-100% markup on their re-sales.

I lost out on 4 tix to Munich in the presale due to Ticketmaster jacked up website, then saw similar tickets for $150 more at a resale site or for hundreds more in connection with a hotel package within 6 hours of SELL OUT being declared.

Obviously overseas games are popular enough that the NFL is expanding their presence on the annual schedule. We are rapidly approaching the point where every team should expect one such game per year.

Given that it’s something we have to do, I suppose Scotland would be an enjoyable place to have one.

All it takes is for their franchise player to say "I'm not playing overseas" and that team scrap that plan immediately.
I've heard the players say in the past that they hate overseas trips for the jet lag and the recovery/rest these guys need each week.

Mileage wise, it isn’t that much further for a Boston team than flying to San Diego. I think apps 4700km vs 5500 to London.
The problem is the 5 time zones/6 to Germany/Spain. But plane flight times are similar. I think such complaints are just background noise for the most part (guys will complain about EVERY AWAY game).

West coast teams maybe have a good case. But Jax plays two in a row, other teams get a bye or Thursday game week prior as a half bye to make it more manageable.

The whole 17th game is a much bigger issue to my way of thinking. Some teams season ticket holders losing a home game is another issue bigger than time zone travel.

It’s not just season tickets. Home field advantage is a competitive balance issue. Not just Denver, alsondomevand non dome teams, different climates, turf or grass, lots of little differences that add up to a big advantage.

With the 17 game schedule all teams should play 8 games at home, 8 games at an opponents home, and one at a neutral site. Except Denver, **** them. They should play every game at sea level.

Webster's is always looking for new words: alsondomevand.

I thought it was French at first, having to do with a woman's shoe case for expensive heels. But perhaps it is Cajun, having to do with the feel of swamp leeches on your skin.

lol. It’s not Cajun it’s raging AI. Damn touchscreen keyboard does crazy ****. I usually catch and edit those. should be “also dome and non dome teams”…

I'll never forget my short visit to Scotland!

In March 1964, I was on my way to be stationed at Ramstein AFB in Germany for a 3 year assigment. I was only 18 years old and this was an extremely long flight on a C118 4 Engine Prop Job. I think the total flight time in air was about 22 Hours.

Anyhow, there were two layover refueling stops on the way to Frankfurt, Germany with the first layover at Goose Bay Labrodor and the second one at Glasgow, Scotland.

I'll never forget Scotland not because of what I saw in my one hour there, but because just before my plane was due to take off, I had wicked cramps and had to go to the bathroom. So I went to the bathroom and by the time I finished, I looked out at the flight line and my plane had the engines running and the stairway had been removed.

Can you imagine a recently out of high school 18 year old (kid) soldier about to be stranded in Scotland? Holy ****! I yelled at one of the people who worked at the airport to see if they could stop the plane and TG they were able delay the plane. The stairs were put back out and I was able to board the plane with the engines running.

So, yeah, I can say I've been to Scotland and it was quite an experience.

You left your mark, soldier. Classic story, running all the way.

Yeah, you do. From memory, it’s of decent standard!

It’s called ‘Murrayfield Stadium’ btw, not ‘Murray Field’; we don’t tend to call sports stadia ‘Field’ - we use ‘Park’ or ‘Stadium’. Murrayfield is the name of the part of Edinburgh that the stadium is in.

Celtic Park and Ibrox Stadium - homes of Celtic (yay) and Rangers (boo) - would also make good options. CP holds just over 60,000, and Ibrox about 50,000. They’re both in Glasgow.

I never had a bowl. Bangers and mash either

Would the locals fill the stadium up?

I find it difficult to believe that there are that many NFL fans living there. If not then an NFL team in Scotland, Ireland and England would be a good way to break into the global market. You couldnt ask for 3 better rivalries IMO. Find 1 more location for a 4 team division and get them into the current NFL format and rotation.

That Division would have a Champion every season.
