The Official Gonzo Extension Watch Thread

The team isnt going to pay extra money they dont have to because of a perceived risk to a player. Every player has risk of injury

I think you are mistaken that it happened.
No, it happened last season.

Not every player is one of the best at his position like Gonzalez. So, you're telling me that the Pats are going roll Gonzo out game 1 and have a 3 Million dollar CB cover a 70 million dollar WR in JSN? This I must see.

I think you either misremember or are making it up.
Wait. You think the patriots are going to pay a player more money than his contract calls for because he will be defending a guy who makes a lot of money?
So does Will Campbell get a raise to block big money DEs?

Again can you show me any example ever where a team gave a player more money than his contract with 2 years left because a guy he faced on an opponent makes a lot of money?

Gonzo's contract was always going to be the last one to get done. They had to get the AJ Brown trade finished, they might even rework his deal before they get Gonzo's contract done.

Nobody should hold their breath for this, it will happen eventually.

Bedard makes a case in yesterday's column that it would be unusual for Gonzo to get a completely new contract in year 3 of a 6 year control window - that it just isn't done except by dumb teams, and it didn't happen for most of his contemporaries. The Pats are probably offering a bump from the $2.5M this year, and he's scheduled to earn 18 in year 5 as it stands now. So the new contract more likely comes for year 5, next year, when he starts to get expensive, and both sides want to avoid the year 6 franchise tag option. That would follow the norm for successful CBs coming out of their initial agreements with their teams.

No, Im not like you.

Recall last season when you told us that Polk and Baker had higher potential than Hollins?
Wait. You think the patriots are going to pay a player more money than his contract calls for because he will be defending a guy who makes a lot of money?
Why are the Pats working on an extension for Gonzo then? According to you just tell him see you in 2027.
So does Will Campbell get a raise to block big money DEs?
Makes no sense. Campbell is in year 2 of his contract and cant negotiate until year 3 is accrued.

Again can you show me any example ever where a team gave a player more money than his contract with 2 years left because a guy he faced on an opponent makes a lot of money?
I dont recall who it was and dont have time right now to look.

The already-paid opponent sets the market.

Gonzalez is considered on-par with said opponent. So that's Gonzalez' market tier too.

Year 4 is when extensions start happening.

Stingley, Anderson, and Smith-Njigba himself are examples.

Gonzo is in year 4.

He completed year 3 with flying colors.

The argument was that the patriots will give Gonzalez a raise for 2026 without him signing an extension.
The justification for that argument was they won’t let him cover JSN who signed a 70 mill contract while his salary is 3 mill.

Of course they are going to try to extend him, but the argument was ass.

You certainly are not like me that’s why I figure you mad it up.
Just like you made up the next sentence that I never said.
What I said was if Hollins is WR5 and will never see the field we should keep a younger player with a chance to develop.

Of course the Oatriots are working on an extension for Gonzalez. No one disputes that. The disagreement is that you said they will give him a raise for 2026 without an extension.
You lied when I asked for proving that had ever happened and now use the “I don’t have time to check my fact” excuse, which is the same as admitting you are wrong.

You said they have to give Gonzalez more money because he is going to be defending a guy who makes a lot, so by that logic the guy who blocks guys who make a lot should get more money. Of course it makes no sense, that’s the point, what you said makes no more sense than the simple extension to any other player.

Amazingly you make a dumb comment and instead of backing away, you escalate it to paragraphs of back and forth. Typical you.

You figured wrong like always.

You told us that Polk and Baker held greater upside. Is there a shred of evidence to prove that? NOPE. While we are on this subject you also told us that Hollins got Mcdaniels fired. Another lie.

I propose a bridge extension while they continue to try to reach a long term contract.

Move some of Gonzos 2027 salary into 2026.

Currently Gonzo is slated to earn 3 million and change for 2026.

JSN is the highest paid WR in the NFL. Gonzo erased JSN in the Super Bowl and has proven that he is among the best in the NFL at his position. This season Gonzo will square off vs 3 of the 5 highest paid WRs in the NFL - JSN, DK Metcalf and Justin Jefferson.
Amazingly you make a dumb comment and instead of backing away, you escalate it to paragraphs of back and forth. Typical you.
Talk about stupid. You still bad mouth Hollins when he was the only NE WR to score in the Super Bowl vs Seattle.

As always you bastardize my comments to fit your agenda.
I did not say either of those things, but you know that.

There is no such thing as a “bridge extension”. You said you wanted to give him a raise this year without an extension.

You are lying throughout this response.

Again show me one example of a player who got a raise because of the contracts of players he would play against this year. Bubble, stumble and deflect all you want, no player has ever been given a raise because of what players he is going to be facing and how much they make.

You brought Hollins into this, proving my point. Hollins is not a good WR. You don’t know much about the game to understand that.

It'll happen by mid-July

Same thing with Sauce Gardner last year - he still showed up for training camp knowing that it was in the works

He wants guaranteed money now in lieu of risking it all for $3 million this season and the Pats want to keep him beyond next year - though I don't know if he's going to risk a $100 million contract for $3 million this year if for some reason it didn't get done

He's got $19 milion guaranteed next season, and I'm sure he'd play well heading into free agency for that amount - but if nothing happens and he's expected to risk it all for so little this season, I'd guess he comes down with the hamstring flu

Leme be the first to say it….3 firsts and call it a trade…anything less…nah. Pay him.

My guess is the team wants him to play

Problem with Bedard's take is good CBs getting an extension before their 4th season is starting to be a trend. Stingley and Gardner got new contracts before their 4th year and Surtain got an extension before his 4th year.

Gonzalez or at least his agent/agency is sitting there going well these guys got it and my guy is as good or better. Also Gonzalez and Surtain are repped by the same agency so it's probably been a point used in talks.

If you want him long term then pay him now, waiting only raises the cost significantly.

Witherspoon is hoping Gonzalez signs first. Both CB's are waiting to see who blinks first.
Veterans report to Pats camp on 7/24 and Seahawks camp kicks off on 7/25.

You have already burned through 1 screen name due to lying and stupidity.

Quit while youre ahead.
