Putting yards aside, the real question is do you want Boutte to have more targets? This was the problem when Meyers was in NE. You do not want to run an offense through him. This was also the case with Edelman and White in 2019. Both dominated in targets, but drives stalled a ton that season. Those aren't guys you run your offense through - they were complementary pieces to Gronk and a better supporting cast like they had in 2016.
SF had the same issue with Jennings in 2024 when Aiyuk went out with injury. He had a career year, but their offense was worse and Jennings turtled once the spotlight was now on him in crunch time. Same thing in 2025 where they went into desperation mode targeting McCraffrey and Jennings by default. Defenses shut that down when it mattered.
Bills are going through the same dilemma right now. Shakira was the 3rd to 4th most target player and averaging 15-16 yards per reception his 1st two seasons. His average has plummeted since Diggs left. He's not a guy you run an offense though. Bean was in denial for a few years, but is now feeling the pressure and just traded for DJ Moore.
Back to Boutte. All he's shown is circus catches and be a last resort type receiver for Maye. We are also assuming Maye is going to continue to put the ball where it needs to be on such low % throws. If he doesn't, Boutte is worthless. He also hasn't shown much in the short to intermediate routes. Once he catches the ball, he's immediately tackled. That's the problem I have with him. He has his place on the team, but hasn't proven yet to warrant a significant amount of more targets.
