DRAFT Welcome to New England - Texas A&M OT Dametrious Crownover (6th round, #196)

I like this pick. Big kid.

The key word for this guy is potential. I don't see him contributing a lot this year. Maybe some jumbo packages. They need to fix his hands and technique. He said he already started training to be a swing tackle. The adage that cannot teach size or athleticism is why we selected him. All the physical tools are there. He is an investment into a tough position to fill in the modern NFL, ant it will take a few years to get the return out of him.

They are pretty deep at tackle now which is good but guard still feels light. Hopefully one of the UDFAs like Rizy has some juice.

Will watch and see how he responds to the coaching offered by the Pats, it may come to his motivation to accept what the Pats will expect and offer. He certainly has the size, attitude and desire unknown.

If we assume that Lomu will eventually take over at RT with Will Campbell at LT then going forward our backup OT doesn’t really need to be a “swing” tackle. You can have a RT only which is what this guy appears to be because Lomu can flip sides if Campbell ever got hurt.

Think we carry 8 OL on the roster?

OG/C Brown
OG/T EVT
OG Onwenu
OT Campbell
OT Moses
OT Lomu
OT Crownover

I agree with those 8 as roster players and as projected to be active every week.

That being said, we need another IOL. If there is an injury, we have then no backups.

Wallace is our 2nd backup IOL for now.

Vera-Tucker can play tackle as well if needed

6'7 336 lbs. Crownover sounds like a legit RT prospect. Getting him in the 6th could turn out to be a steal. If he develops into a competent swing tackle, this is a win.

He moves well, and looks like a better tackle than Bryant.

I've been a big supporter of WC staying at LT, but if both Lomu and Crownover develop over the next 2 years, it's not out of the question that the 2028 line will see Campbell at G, Lomu at LT and Crownover at RT. Not because of arm length, but just because Lomu looks like a natural at LT. Could also see Campbell at RT if we were to draft a promising G next year. WC really needs to step it up this year and show that the end of last year was due to injury.

If crownover shows the ability to play some guard then thatd be amazing. You could then get away with 8 and technically have 2 backup options at both ot and og. If he can’t then we’ll likely need to carry 9 ol with another og on the roster.

Unless it is season ending, you probably don't want to make two changes to cover up one injury. That is why swing tackles are valuable.

Yeah, there's a give and take. LT is harder to play in the NFL than RT. Trying to find a swing tackle is therefore going to be harder than finding a RT-only backup. So it's balancing the quality of player you can get vs. not wanting to change both sides of the line. For instance, in 2015, Solder got hurt and they flipped Vollmer from RT to LT. That's what opened the door for Marcus Cannon at RT. He ended up being a high caliber RT but couldn't have played LT. If they kept Vollmer on the right side for continuity, the lesser caliber player they'd have to put at LT would outweigh the benefit of that continuity.

If Bryant or Crownover or anyone else they get can be good enough LT options that moving Lomu over from RT to LT (assuming he eventually establishes himself as the starting RT) wouldn't be the best option then by all means that's awesome. But I think one of the benefits of investing highly in a LT-capable player to start at RT is that on the depth level piece you have some flexibility to find a better player without that swing versatility, since again RT only guys are easier to find than LT-capable players.

Ive mentioned it a before. 6’7” at G is kind of tall. Not that it can’t be done. It is preferred in the 6’2” range but he has the agility

Yeah I can see that as they may want to get a rotation - the question is how do you get there in terms of cuts. I'd be OK starting with 2 QBs and stash the rookie on IR with the foxboro flu for awhile.

There might be some other draftees that we can actually sneak on to PS as someone like Prunty, rated @500 on some of the draft ratings boards, went a full 300 plus points higher - which doesn't bother me because it's PFF but it does show how different teams can have completely different ratings on a guy

I think he's strictly a tackle.
