DRAFT Welcome to New England - Illinois Edge Gabe Jacas! (2nd round, #55)

Judon as a floor seems pretty darned good as far as I’m concerned.
Absolutely positively! It's just how good he can be.. he also has said that he loves coach Vrabel and coach Smith he said he was here on his 30 visit and loved how much the coaches put on you..
He's a starter opposite Jones.. I'm convinced..

Landry is....

I’d say most successful three down OLB’s have similar traits, strength being the common denominator. I loved the Elijah Ponder signing last offseason, but he needed to get stronger in the upper body. He should be much stronger this season.

The OLB rotation of Landry, Ponder and Jacas is sick. The DE rotation of Milton Williams, Dremont and maybe Farmer playing some 3 technique is sick.

They could probably use another fatty DT who can play nose tackle to plop next to Barmore. They could fill this role with an older vet or later in the draft.
Do you think laundry can play out side lb? We're kind of thin there

Depends where Landry is in rehab when the season begins. Landry, Ponder, Swinson, Jacas is the depth chart until we hear different.

I think because of his strength Jacas could probably slide to the front of the line and start right now. If Ponder got stronger this offseason he could start and would probably be their best overall OLB if he reached his athletic potential.

But Jacas could play today I think, maybe Ponder doesn't get much stronger and becomes a situational rusher only... or washes out completely. But I doubt it, this is a hyper talented group.

I just read that Landry is listed as a lb,I thought he was thought his position was edge

The OLB's are Landry, Ponder, Swinson and Jacas.

I'd lump Dre'mont in with Milton Williams as true 4/3 DE's who can slide inside and play some DT on pass/run blitzing downs.

Farmer I'd call a 3/4 three technique DE, just because of his wingspan and skillset, potentially a Deatrich Wise but not quite as tall or long. Wise (85 3/8") had uniquely wide wings, but Farmer (83 3/8") is still pretty wide for a 6'3" guy.

What’s the difference between OLB and Edge?

Isn’t it the same as the difference between Edge and DE?

Seriously? It's in the name Outside Line Backer. They play Behind the front 4or3 on either side of the middle linebacker.
Edge is the same as defense end. They are at the end or edge of the defense line, the front 4 or 3. The pats were the first team to use a 3-4 defense. In that scheme the 3 down lineman clogged up the middle so the OLB could rush the passer/contain the runner. In that scheme the OLB was very important.
But the OLB can move up on the defense line.

Not quite. 'Edge' isn't just another word for DE—it's actually an umbrella term that includes both 4-3 DEs and 3-4 pass-rushing OLBs.

Because modern defenses use so many hybrid fronts, 'Edge' simply describes the player's role (rushing the passer from the outside of the offensive tackle) rather than their traditional position or stance. Whether they have their hand in the dirt (DE) or are standing up (OLB), if their main job is outside contain and pass rush, they are an Edge.

Agreed. I believe jacas, Ponder, Jones will be the key rotation guys until Landry comes off PUP being he's rehabbing likely he'll need the rest of the offseason for that. I really like jacas I feel he's out he's our best pick in the draft! Still feel like we should be reaching out to Devin white as well for LB depth.

Jacas could certainly have the biggest impact if Landry is injured, even if he's not they rotate the edge position often to keep them fresh.

The NFL period during which veteran free agents no longer count against the compensatory draft pick formula ends on the Monday immediately following the conclusion of the NFL Draft. After this date, teams can sign unrestricted free agents without risking the cancellation of potential compensatory picks. Assuming this rule hasn't changed, they may add some value vets still sitting out there to round out their 90 man roster.

Thanks for sharing this information I wasn't aware on the formula! So that likely explains why Vrabel's not signed anyone yet. I'm fully expecting a Safety and another WR in the UDFA signings.

We also took a linebacker Obiazor a former safety who is fast, rangy and can handle backs and TEs.. he could also factor in as well. But the pass rush has gotten significantly better simply by adding Jones, Jacas and the development of Ponder. If we get anything from swinson as well is an added bonus.

The defensive front as of today is:

Edges :
Jacas, Ponder, Swinson, Landry, Jones

Defensive Line: farmer, Williams, Barmore, Davis, Gregory

LB: Spillane, Elliss, Obiazor Brit

Secondary:
Gonzo, Davis, Jones, dial, woods, prunty

Safety :

Byard, Woodson, petus, Brown
