I like watching teams i'm a fan of(BC, OSU) and I LOVE to see what players may be drafted by the Pats, other than that i'm all set with college football. Now if they would change the Bowl System to a Playoff Style system, that would definitely get me watching more..

I don't recall referring to you and that comment definitly didn't come from anything I read from you. It was partly in reference to a particular post and the overall college bashing by people that obviously don't know and admittantly don't follow college football.

Sometimes I think a lot of New Englanders spend a little to much time on their high horse. Constantly crapping on things that they either don't care about or understand - or just generically dogging a region that most have never visited. It gets old, especially when it takes over a thread.

Much like Penn State isn't a northeastern college? last I checked Pennsylvania was above the mason - dixon line and it is on the east coast.

The majority of the country considers DC to be in the Northeast, but they must be wrong because the people of New England disagree?

I started this thread because I've been wanting to ask this question for so long.
I love Football. I never prejudged the game at College level. I gave it a chance. I tried it to watch when some notable schools are playing. But the college system intentionally alienates average football fans from building any type of interest.
I watched many big name schools play some unknown universities and it was absolutely boring. I mean how many times would you watch the Patriots drop 56 on the Bills?!?!?!

I understand there are financial motives, the more games, the more money they bring in.
I just want to see a conference of good to average teams battle it out for 10 games. Come up with a playoff or point system.
Maybe copy the European soccer league. Different divisions, the two worst teams from Div I move down. The two best teams from Div II move up.

All you need to know about how much of a mess college football is that they were saying on ESPN that Ohio St hasn't played a game in over 50 days. That would be like playing the championship games on the 2oth and then sending the teams home and playing the Super Bowl on St Patrick's day. There is no chance that you will ever get an accurate representation of how good teams are under these circumstances.

There's a thing that happens in between called Thanksgiving, final exams and Christmas. These kids aren't pros.

They are not supposed to be as good as pros either. of course this isn't a superior product, everyone knows that. Most of the intrigue though is in the spectacle, and the fact is, the lack of speed on the college level produces some funky offenses. The option play is used regularly, a spread running O like West Virginia's doesn't work in the pros, when is the last time you've seen a pro team do a fumblerooski? Or a statue of liberty? Or even a rugby-style punt?

I agree that those type of games are boring. But with the scholarship reductions they are becoming less and less. Give it another couple of years and I think that will be the exception instead of the norm. Just look at the opening weekend when App state beat Michigan. The big schools can't just gobble up guys and hide them on their roster, they don't have the scholarships.This year was the first year the affects of the rule change were felt. Just look at how many two and three loss teams are in the top ten.

Teams like South Florida, Rutgers etc.. are really being boosted by this and it seems like the NCAA made a good call, as it will slowly errode the competive imbalance.

I think they should use a playoff system, even if it only includes the top 8 teams in the country. They could use the five BCS bowls as a psuedo playoff. It wouldn't be a cure all, but its at least a step in the right direction.

I don't know if can you drop the two worst and pick up the two best, I believe it is based on the enrollment numbers (I could be wrong). I also don't buy the "we can't have one argument", because every other level of college football has a playoff system, including 1AA. It all comes back to cash and that is a shame.

I'd probrably watch some games if we got alot of them. The channel some games are on I'd have to pay extra for and it mostly shows Hockey so it's a waste of time subscribing to it, unless, ofcourse you like Hockey. I'd watch it because it's football. I guess it's like some guys over here not watching lower standards of soccer because the quality isn't as good as the elite division, but I'm a bit of a sports freak so I tend to watch every level of the sports which is why I'd probrably end up watching some college games.

There was a program on MTV called Two a Days I think. I tuned in thinking it was about football and how the younger players develop but instead it concentrated more on little boys dating cheerleaders. Still, it give me an idea of just how big High school and College football is in part of the U.S. during the 15 minutes I actualy watched it before switching over. Only to then find some stupid sh!t about rich kids in Laguna Beach. Yes, as you correctly guessed the T.V. went off..

You have it wrong.

The reason why they have playoffs in lower divisions is because they play less games during the season.

Why do they play less games?

Because no one comes to watch them. Less revenues. The bowl guys aren't holding the playoffs back. It's the presidents and ADs unwilling to lose home game revenue.

The conference finalists in the BCS play 13 games during the season. The lower divisions play 9 or 10 or 11 games. The bigger divisions want to maximize revenue.
By the way, I was responding to your statement about OSU. I wrote this is why Ohio State hasn't played since November. The season ending game is before Thanksgiving traditionally. The bowls start the week before Christmas.

Regardless, if you had 8 teams in playoffs, that could potentially mean 16 games for students who are in school. That's a lot of games. And that's why it's likelier they'll do a plus one.

Personally, I'd prefer longer playoffs with fewer games during the season, and no conference championships.

But I'm not the one that's going to take a $15 million dollar hit for one less home game and less revenues from the lack of a conference championship.

The average football fan loves college football just as much as he loves the NFL. Now the average football fan from the Northeast? Not so much. The average football fan from Alabama or Nebraska would obviously prefer college football. ESPN did a poll asking what do you prefer, college football or the NFL? It was a close vote but college football won in the majority of the states. College football is weak in the Northeast because of the Ivy League and the lack of big state universities. While the BCS isn't helpful it doesn't stop 90,000 people from showing up for Louisiana-Monroe vs. Texas.

But I would agree... compared to the NFL, it sucks big time. They have too many players rotating, their play is inconsistent from one game to the next and there is a lot of ridiculous scoring / play calling ... Some of the plays they execute are laughable...

But hey, what do you expect ? This isn't the NFL. I think the NFL spoils you a lot. I remember going to a High School game once and although you realize these are young players who are still learning the game.. the play calling is sometimes appaling (from the QB or coach)... Makes you want to scream and tackle someone. Anyway, that's why I prefer to stick to the NFL, particularly if I want to watch a game..
