I would not be surprised if the ultimate outcome ends up being something like a 3rd & Boutte for Brown and a 6th. The Eagles will say they made out great because they got an ascending player who is on a cheap deal and it will allow them to absorb the dead money hit easily without having to go sign another WR to replace Brown. NE will say they basically just traded a 3rd for Brown and a 6th because Brown is going to take much of Boutte’s snaps anyway and is taking the cap dollars they’d planned to give to Boutte in an extension.

You’re right, Boutte is totally unlike Brown. He’s still on the team that drafted him, instead of being such a PITA that not one but two teams have run him out of town despite his football talent.

I don't expect the Patriots to go back to the super Bowl next year, but I do believe they will return to it numerous times and win their share over the next 10 years. What I believe in is the quality of the front office and coaching staff Vrabel has assembled to turn this franchise into long term contenders. They know what they are doing, they have a plan and are able to adapt as things change. And I find it really strange that some Patriot fans are so wed to their pessimIsm that they can't see beyond it, and start moaning and groaning proactively. I'm no fan of Rick Pitino but there was one thing he nailed and that was that the negativity of fans in this region sucks. I believe they will nail free agency and the draft again, and the team will be better even if the results aren't as sterling as they were this season, I also believe that most of the rookies from last season will become better players year 2, and will make this team stronger going forward.

I think you are perhaps overreacting to the word pessimist or to what others have posted. My post in this thread used pessimism in the context of the deal for AJ Brown for a 1st and a 3rd getting done. I just don't think he's worth the asking price at this phase of his career. I'd rather get someone younger, cheaper and on the way up. But as I wrote, if Vrabel really feels he's worth the price, I'd be in because he knows the player so well. The fact they're still talking suggests there is strong interest on our side, but at our price.

I'm overall not optimistic nor pessimistic about next season. I never make my mind up this early. I used to wait till the end of pre-season decades ago, but now that pre-season is so meaningless I usually wait till after Game 4 to really decide what I think. Having a deal for AJ Brown done wouldn't change my mind much because we wouldn't know what we could have had for the 1st and the 3rd, and we won't know much about how he does here till we play a few games. Could be he goes into diva mode for whatever reason and the whole thing is a bust.

I was thinking a similar kind of thing: a 2nd and Douglas for Brown and a 6th. The 2nd would mean at decent chance of finding talent at a high level to make up for Brown, and Douglas would be a step down from Boutte since we're giving up a 2nd.

Of course I don't expect PHL to bite on either of these deals, at least not in the next few days, but think we should stand our ground and not over-pay.

If we aren't giving up a 1st, it suggests we probably do have a 2nd on the table, IMO.
