PATRIOTS NEWS Looks like the Pats are re-signing Chaisson

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
This has nothing to do with PFF.
Statistically he was the best. Nobody else did what he did.

I don't expect him to be the best pass rusher on the team next year. But he makes an excellent Robert Mathis, and age + ability + good contract = an excellent signing.

If you're going to be prisoner of the moment about the Super Bowl, when everyone but Williams and Gonzalez played below where they were, and just ignore everything else they did all year, then I really can't help you.
You're totally 100% wrong that I'm a prisoner of the moment.
I wrote during the year that he was having a heck of a lot of trouble. I was consistent.
We relied on Davis and Gonzalez to take on pulling OL because he was either getting washed inside or bullied. 3rd down pass rush specialist. Essentially the Uche role but he's much better than Uche.

As for stats, and speaking of Uche, he too had a 10+ sack season.

Sometimes more speed, sideline to sideline, is needed at LB. Walker is small and fast so tough for an EDGE but easy for a small fast LB or DB. I don't use PFF and don't think those edge rushes by Walker are on the EDGE. We need faster outside LBs or big Nickel or whatever you call it.
I watched it closely. It was the same problem all season. The problem was the edge.

The edge can be the EDGE or the outside LB/big nickel. How do you know it wasn't the outside LB?

Holy **** dude, he was the best pass rusher in the entire playoffs.

The Cult of Belichick is having a very hard time with their success. Scrambling to try and create negatives. The draft wasn't really any good, Chiasson really isn't any good....

BB was often knocked for not paying players who came in on the cheap and developed into something. He seemed to prefer starting over with a different cheap player. In contrast, this is an example of the develop and retain philosophy in action. Assuming the dollars are reasonable, sighing Chiasson to this deal sends a good message and sets expectations for other players fighting for their spot on the team.
Our rosters under BB were also incredibly stacked with core pieces locked up. Year after year the turnover was maybe one or two "core" pieces but mostly just tinkering on the edges where it isn't really sustainable to pay a ton of money. Compared to now where we're still building the core and the roster isn't a totally blank slate but still pretty wide open.

We have Tavai, Spillane and Gibbens. None of those guys are going to tackle Walker on the EDGE. So we only have Elliss (not the most instinctive guy), or Woodson that can help with the edge or the DBs. Hawkins is not rangy enough and usually too deep. Asking Chaisson to catch Walker is tough. Seattle knew that so they line up to shift the DBs to one side and run Walker to the other side. It is a lack of athleticism that hopefully we can fix, and was obvious to Seattle.

That is why a bunch of posters want a fast LB in the draft like Kyle Louis to cover TEs and chase down RBs. We are missing that guy. Fast and instinctive.

I didn't rewatch the plays like you so I could be wrong. But it was a nagging issue all season like you said.

Might be considered a desperation signing. We so badly need pass rush that we were incentivized to be aggressive.

I really hope it wasn't for big money.
Desperation on Feb. 21st?

This post is spot on.

Tonga would be fine.

I think that Hawkins is most likely.

Thinking both are likely unless Vrabel is eyeing someone out there over hawkins.

Tonga and Hawkins would bring back the whole d from last year and then we can add to it.

It's not a matter of speed or LBs etc. It's a matter of a linemen getting washed out consistently and thereby creating wide open spaces that no LB or DB could cover.

?
Chiasson was on the line and he was getting engulfed. He was biting inside consistently

Getting engulfed and washed out are completely different than diving inside. If Walker is going to the edge, the offense will engulf and wash the EDGE inside.

Someone like Jennings is great at holding the OL off him (avoids washing out), but then he will not have any sacks.

I remember Walker getting to the sideline and then turning up field. I would have to rewatch it. Thanks for the heads up

I doubt they're done. I'm sure they're having some real discussions with Landry about his future.
Signing Chaisson means they need to only fill the Pass Rusher 1 position, instead of both pass rusher positions. Saves them (my guess, no information here) a draft pick. I think the Crosby/Hendrickson stuff is just smoke.
I don’t know. Hendrickson would be a good move.

Not really sure what conversations there are to be had with Landry about his future other than if he needs to let them know if he changed banked accounts for them to direct deposit his guaranteed salary into this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they still bring in another pass rusher, but Chaisson looks like he could turn the corner and become that type of guy. At the very least he's one of those guys you re-sign if you can. Glad to have him back.

Making Chaisson the “top guy” at edge, with a rotation of Hendrickson and Landry on the other side (where hopefully keeping both on reduced snaps means neither gets too banged up), spot snaps from some depth players, and of course a strong presence from the interior from Williams and others, may be enough to do the job - though I would still throw some draft selections at it.
