This move increased Mack Hollins' cap number and his 2026 compensation by $400K meeting the very definition of an extra expense.
But it counts toward the cap so it comes out of the money already alloyed to them to spend.
Extra expense would be something that doesn’t count toward the cap.
In other words they gave it to him instead of someone else, not over and above.

It was originally classified as LTBE and so it hit the cap but was escrowed. The escrow amount will be credited back to the cap as such for the coming year but go right back out as a signing bonus. By calling it a signing bonus it will be a wash as far as the cap hit goes but Hollins will now get the $400K where before he did not.
Mack Hollins' 50 receptions incentive was not originally classified at LTBE,. It was classified as NLTBE since he had 31 catches in 2024.

So... you're telling me even though they are paying him, they aren't paying him? It's like monopoly money? Star Wars credits? Like Game of Thrones gold dragons? Pretend?
No I am saying they are paying him out of the pool of money to pay players. So they are paying it to him instead of someone else. It’s within the cap, big above it.

30 receptions was categorized as LTBE for 2025
40 receptions was NLTBE for 2025. Will be categorized as LTBE for 2026.

Since Mack Hollins has only one year left on his deal the $400K signing bonus hit the 2026 cap entirely.

Good catch. My bad, I misread the 30 reception LTBE as being 50. Not even close to my biggest mistake of the day, I absentmindedly voiced disagreement with my wife this morning... no idea wth I was thinking there

Thank you for taking the time to post the correction of my error twice, you're still way behind my wife for corrections on the same error today though

Due to injury Hollins missed 2 regular season games and came up 4 catches short of a $400K incentive for 50 catches. The team increased his signing bonus by $400K to cover it. That's how a front office wins hearts and minds, not to mention FA's notice things like that

That's the right way to run a team.

Were you thinking at all there? From the description given that seems questionable

It was a turn of phrase, in retrospect it seems pretty obvious my brain was napping. As a rule I avoid tweaking the tiger's tail, in fact I go out of my way to avoid it

This presumes two things

1.) The Patriots have already set their 2026 cash budget without knowing the exact 2026 League Cap number. There is a $4.5M range($301.2M to $305.7M). 90% of $4.5M is $450,000.
2.) Once the 2026 cash budget has been set it is set in place so if in January the budget was fixed to be $300,000,000 it now can't be increased to $300,400,000. I, for one, believe $400,000 is such a incredibly small percentage of $300 million.

If the Patriots gave Mack Hollins someone else's $400K, who is the player? In other words, who should Mack Hollins thank? We can eliminate members of the 2023/2024/2025/2026 draft classes as their 2026 cap numbers are set by the CBA. We can also eliminate all those whose deals are one-year minimum salaries contracts. I, for one, have a hard time believing the Patriots are going to offer in March a free agent $400K less in 2026 compensation just because in February they paid Mack Hollins a $400K signing bonus. Nor do I believe the Patriots are going to cut/trade/ask for another player to take a paycut because of the $400,000. If you do, we will have to agree to disagree.

Perhaps the logical side of you reasoned this dynamic can go both ways (not that logic applies to marital discourse ... just sayin').

The comment implied the Patriots giving Hollins 400k proves they aren’t cheap.
The 400k is charged to the cap.
The cap is mine already alloted to be signed on all players comp
It isn’t extra money the decided to Patrice and above they’re player comp budget it’s part of it

Do you dispute this?
