Stefon Diggs: Contract

I understand what your saying... a few things of note. We had TB12 so that alone made BBs roster decisions alot more easier to make on guys..

TB12 wasn't TB12 yet. This was the first Super Bowl.

Agree with everything except him having a great season.

The Pats exceeded expectations and made the Super Bowl despite the OL being trash. That can't continue. Would you rather apply the money towards an elite OL or give it to a soon to be 33 year WR going on year 2 of an ACL tear?
It's a high probability that Vrabel beefs up the OL.. also we have to see how Campbell and Wilson come in for training camp.. afte all they essentially played 2 NCAA seasons last NFL season.

We need depth at certain positions.. id say edges as are numrero uno to me...

Question for you rain?

Would you go after Coby Bryant at Safety?

Sorry I'm thinking 2008.. my fault.

If they could restructure him that would be ideal. He's not an alpha WR at this point, he's going to be 33 years old this season. His cap hit is too large.

At worst, his money should be applied towards another WR who can actually play the outside. This is something that many here continue to overlook. Why in the world would any team pay a guy limited to the slot $22.5M with a cap number of $26.5M? That is a terrible use of money.

When Welker walked, Amendola was supposed to be the replacement. But nobody saw Edelman emerging as that guy. Pats need to find a cheaper replacement in the slot who can actually shake man coverage which Diggs can no longer do.
I've advocated several times for letting Diggs go and putting that money towards Alec Pierce as an X. And using the left over cap dollars on a true move TE to take the place of the slot (Likely or Okonkwo, for examples). I am absolutely fine with letting Diggs go at that cap number. That wasn't the part I was responding to.

The post I quoted said to let Diggs go and then do nothing at WR other than bring in minor camp competition type players for a depth chart of Boutte/Hollins/Williams/Douglas/Chism. It's the "do nothing after cutting Diggs" part that I am vehemently against. Cutting Diggs makes tons of sense to me pending what the replacement plans are.

I believe it's pretty obvious to us the fan that Diggs contract will be reworked where it's beneficial to Diggs and the team.. he's not going anywhere he's an integral part of the culture and the offense.. sure absolutely your right sign another WR it will only help the entire offense.. I've been beating the drum that we need to upgrade at TE that's where the offense can really flourish.. let's say we have Diggs, Boutte, Hollins Williams as your WRs with adding pierce or another wr.. then go after likely or Pitts that should be the move.. remember how Gronk and Hernandez terrorized defenses..

At the number you mentioned absolutely agree.. I'm a firm believer Diggs remains here unless something off the field again transpires... I say Vrabel reworks his deal.. gives him more upfront money and moves $$ around to other areas of the team.. the most logical thing for is to add a say a Westbrook- ikhene type and sign likely or pitts at TE.. we still have Hollins, Boutte, Williams and pop at wr.. ?

I have no issues with Diggs staying on a friendly contract as a PLAYER.

I have great concern that is personal life is a problem waiting to happen. Similar to Barmore TBH.

Agreed! & there lies the problem.. Diggs IMO performed this season.. for the $$$ Barmore is making the production didn't equate..

I think a lot depends on Digg's legal issues and whether the team feels like he's worth the investment.

If the answer is yes, I don't see them messing with the contract of a guy who caught a whopping 85% of the passes thrown his way.

He's not the traditional 1A WR - he's actually something better IMO. I'm not sure extending him to lessen the cap makes sense at his age and injury history but one never knows.

The team's comments made it seem like they were inclined to cut him some slack

I'm not sure they feel the same way about Barmore who has his own issues.

I liked having Diggs on the team. Good teammate. Questionable employer.

I think his overall performance outside of a couple games was super overrated and I hope they move on. I cannot see him continuing to be a good soldier with an even more diminished role, which his should be (or we are screwed).

I'm with you - is he going to be a problem down the line? The answers are yes/no/maybe

If yes, then cut him.

If maybe, then I could justify honoring one more year of the contract, given his salary last season. It's akin to the franchise tag amount - reflecting his current value based on catching 85% of balls thrown his way, but questionable future given age, injury history and potential for clashes with personal chefs.

If no, then even despite his age I think they could extend him to 2028, knowing that's probably a fake year, keeping him here through 2027 at a reasonable amount, because otherwise he won't be here in 2027 for sure. He'd get a little more guaranteed money spread into the fake year, and heck, if he is still good at age 35 then we've still got him.

I feel like this thread is a year early.
They can easily afford his salary next year, without hampering any free agency.
And there's as good a chance he has a better year, a year removed from the ACL, than he had this year, when he played half the snaps. And he still put up 80/1000.

What the **** do you people want? (Also, he's not making #1 WR money, he's making #2 WR money)

They can afford it, but the OL is in dire need and should be the first priority.

That's highly doubtful. Even though Moss caught 23 TD's in 2007, he was not the same player from his Minnesota days. Each year you noticed a steady decline. Minnesota Diggs and Buffalo Diggs makes NE Diggs looked cooked. His best game against Buffalo had DB's draped all over him after every catch. He had to fight for every yard.

It's really not a good use of money at all for a guy limited to the slot. As I mentioned above, he's not going to come to camp and start shaking and baking DB's off in man coverage. He was awful when DB's manned up on him this season.

Julian Edelman's cap and cash was never more than 17th for WR's and the base salary was never higher than 24th. Diggs' cap is 12th, cash is 13th and base salary is 8th.

The most interesting part is that Diggs is aware the Pats have an out. Given his legal situation and age, I think he's going to take a pay cut to avoid turning into a journeyman.

Edges against the run were awful this season. Pass rush wasn't very either. Landry and Chaisson rely on their one move or they are out of the play.

I hear that name, but I don't know much about him. Hawkins made some plays, but he always got picked on a lot. I'd like an upgrade at FS.
