Yeah DL is always going to be rotational if you have enough depth. Just makes sense to keep guys fresh.I figure that the way that they rotate players if we have guys that can routinely get in the backfield they don't need to be 3 down guys. Landry was 6-2 250 or so and we was a rotational guy his rookie year 591- 60% snaps but then was an every down guy. For perspective Chaisson played 639 snaps-67%(I know he was injured some but it gives perspective on play time).
I was high on Donovan Ez last year because of his 3 cone and he generated 35 or so pressures for the cowboys on 600 snaps. He was pick 12 in the 2nd round.
So in summation, I would like to see them bring in players that can get to the QB and It doesn't matter to me if they are an "every down player".
I think DL is the only position that doesn't require "every down players" in order to keep players fresh and that is why its crucial to bring in several quality pass rushers.
When people say "every down players" on the DL I don't think it's usually meant in terms of snap count though. I think it's meant more that the player isn't a specialist. It sounds good in theory to play your run stuffers against the run and pass rushers vs. the pass but it's not like offenses can't exploit that. You throw in your big run stuffers and they can check to a pass play. Or vice versa. So it's not about literally playing every down, just being able to play on every kind of down.
Now every team wants those guys and they don't grow on trees so you're going to have to live with some "situational" players, but to the extent you can minimize that it leaves you less susceptible to being exploited.
