This is great news. That said, I do think there ought to be an objective evaluation as to whether he or Zak should get the job next year. Perhaps a younger DC makes sense for a team still comparatively early in its rebuild. On the other hand, perhaps the notion that "you cannot lose your job due to injury/illness" applies as much to coaches as (most of the time) it applies to players, which might cause players to feel that denying Williams' return would violate a principle which is important to them. On the other hand, players may appreciate, if Zak gets the nod, that job security and advancement is based solely on one's contribution to the team, that performance is rewarded. I would base it on past and predicted accomplishment and contribution to the team, which would give the nod to Zak, but that will strike some as heartless, I am sure.

It's a genuinely knotty issue. Sometimes the nice thing and the right thing are very different from one another.
If Zak Kuhr is not given the Pats’ DC title then no one can blame him if he takes the DC role with another team.

If they keep Williams let’s hope his health will allow him to do the job.

Word up was that the prostrate c had spread to his collar bone! That's Stage 4. Serious. Prostate cancer eats bone. So any treatments would have been extreme. Cancer free is good. It can still recur or not, but every time you stop it you may hit a future window with better treatments. Glad he's better off than Dennis Hopper, William Hurt (Tufts) & Scott Adams.

That's fantastic news.

I'm not fully convinced it was just Zak. This was supposed to be his first season as a position coach. I wonder how much of a hand Vrabel had in the defense as well as Williams consulting. But we'll see, it could've really just been a really quick acclimation to responsibilities he hadn't really even sniffed before.

Williams had aggressive prostate cancer that had spread all the way to his collarbone and now is cancer free. Remarkable.

I hope all this posters who were saying fire him because of his weight STFU forever.

Really happy for Coach T! Always happy when someone rings the bell on cancer.

I was a fan of Scott Adams.

Watch a video of him from 3-4 months ago and then compare with one from early this month before he died.

He failed fast.

I was a fan of Scott Adams for his comics, until he went off the deep end politically.

He was mentally sick before he was physically sick.

Thank goodness TW appears to have not been psychologically cancerous, and recovered from his physical cancer.

You might be right. It's a painful situation.

Yep. I would think Kuhr will get offers,a nd he should take one if he does. I think a team on the rise should go with the younger guy, but I sort of feel guilty saying so.

Title may not be important to either of them if they have a good working relationship. Some of us care more about the work we are doing than what title we have. It’s really similar to the situation with Josh, if you’re good at something and enjoy doing it why should you aspire to climb the ladder just for the sake of getting to the next rung? We all saw how that worked for Mayo. So let’s not project our fantasies onto guys who may not share them.

If Williams is offered the DC title and job, of course Zak would listen to offers. This is not based on anyone's "fantasies." It is based on an undertanding of human nature expressing itself in an entirely honorable and rational way. If he wants to hang around because he likes his co-workers, that's fine, but to disparage implicitly a desire to advance his career as some sort of lesser "fantasy," if that is what he wants, is Oprahesque nonsense. He might even feel, not unreasonably, that in so competitive an environment as NFL football, where performance supposedly matters, he has earned the position by his performance this year. He is within his rights, in my view, to take that position.

Only disparagement is in your addled mind.

I mean no disparagement to you either, I am saying you’re addled because you are displaying an inability to distinguish between your personal view of the world and universal truth. News flash, those are not the same.

Does Vrabel stick with Kuhr or give Williams his job back? The sensible move would be for Williams to give up the title and go spend time with his family while taking care of his health. I can't imagine working endless hours for months would the best thing after recovering from cancer.

I think that's something Vrabel, Williams, and Kuhr need to decide between each other. If it were up to me, I'd make Williams the Assistant Head Coach/Defense. Let Kuhr get the promotion, but if Williams was assisting towards the end of this season, I think he's gonna teach Kuhr a lot. Gives both guys well-deserved promotions and keeps continuity.
