2026 Draft: WR

I don't think adding a star skill player on offense ever hurts. Remember when the Vikings had Chris Carter but then added Randy Moss to the mix? That only helped them.

Yes you can win by paper cuts as Brady has shown. But that does increase the level of difficulty by requiring nearly perfect execution by the QB over long multiple play drives. He was responsible for lifting the team with his play rather than having reliable mismatches to help him out of tough spots.

I think adding Gronk to the mix as a mismatch nightmare really helped Brady out in phase 2 of the Dynasty. That's another 3 Superbowl championships added to our Trophy case.

Right now Diggs is exactly what we needed as a WR1. He's not as good as he was in his prime but he brings leadership, experience, and savvy. He also elevates his play in the right spots. I don't think it would hurt to add to the WR depth with a youngster capable of taking over that WR1 mantle once Diggs starts to lose a step. In fact a young growing star wideout would benefit a lot from Diggs mentorship at this stage of his career.

That being said, I still feel like Round 1 is going to be reserved for a pass rusher. That's a huge need next year even if we resign Chaisson to a reasonable deal. Round 2 is where the scouts are going to need to do their homework and earn their money. We haven't had a hit at WR for a long time.

I feel like Boutte is a fine candidate for WR2 and he's getting better every year. Kyle Williams is not there yet but he's a fine 3rd WR as a downfield threat. When Maye completes a couple of long passes to KW, that changes how the entire defense plays. I still feel investing at WR is a good use of draft capital. We only need one more prospect but if he's a good one, that could help this offense reach critical mass.
The way I see it is that both Hollins (provides height and helps in the running game) and Diggs (our only high volume WR) can only be relied upon for one more year. Boutte and Williams are our deep threat options but neither are high volume catchers as yet. We essentially need two possession receivers over the next two drafts, one of whom needs to be an excellent blocker. Chism may be one but that's far from set in stone.

Videos 1 & 3 highpoint the ball. I love me a hands catcher.

video 2 is kind of Diggs-ian. Plays from the slot, sits in the zone to get open, uses physicality to gain extra yards.

All this while being the best blocking WR in the draft.

You can never have too many good players. More offensive weapons - WRs, TEs, and RBs - generally a good thing. The question is more one of valance, focus, and cost.

Any player can be schemes against. BB was the master of that. Over the course of a season the stars will generally get their stays, but anyone can be taken out of a game. It's much harder to scheme against a versatile, balanced offense. Not death by papercut, bur more pick your poison.

No matter how dominant, skill players can't do much without a solid OL. Moss Welker and Stallworth with the GOAT still couldn't manage more than 14 points when the OL broke down against the Giants.

Paying $35M/year to a WR limits your ability to afford other players. Will paying that improve your team more than investing in other areas?

There are lots of WRs in this draft that I like, probably over all 3 days. Also some TRs and WRs. That's partly the point. I'm not opposed to picking up a couple, but there's no one who I would say would be too good to pass up at any point. From a draft perspective, it's not my focus, personally.

I am not on the draft a WR early train and I don't know the projection of these players but the thought of having Stribling and Ted Hurst makes my nethers tingle

In a strictly homo way, not a binky one right?

There's a lot of tingling nethers for someone sworn off binkys this year.

My binky love is binky-only in nature.
Last year, Jayden Higgins was a guy that I wanted the Pats to draft so bad (probably my worst case of binkyitis since Bruschi). It took a toll on me that we did not draft him and I have to watch him on the Texans.

Imagine how Mayo is going to feel when Monroe Freeling is drafted one spot ahead of the Pats. You will know how to talk Mayo off the ledge, and then you will understand why Higgins went to TX.

I am actually pretty resigned that Monroe Freeling will not last to the Pats, if he declares.

Well, AJ Brown was a difference maker ...

You know me mayo: I have serious reservations now after yesterday's game and his Jekl/hyde season. You can't be crying for the Football: then drop the pass when it comes your way. A.J. played like a Green Rookie yesterday.

For the niners.
Aiyuk is a year removed from everything: how do you feel about him?? Also I think I would prefer Alec Pierce over A.J. Brown now.

I wouldn't touch Brandon Aiyuk with a 10 foot pole, given his injury history, holdout, and lack of production. Giving big contracts to underachieving prima donnas is a great way to kill a team.

Alec Pierce has produced nicely. But how much of an upgrade is he over who we have, and is he worth the cost.

There seems to be a need to chase after someone - anyone - in pursuit of a star WR. Why?

No thank you on Aiyuk, no thank you on AJ Brown. I agree on Alec Pierce but I also agree with Mayo that he's too similar to Boutte and Williams. What we need is a high volume receiver in my mind. Some version of Justin Jefferson.
