I was absolutely losing my mind yelling at the TV for him take a timeout. As soon as the ball was snapped I turned my back before my friend screamed saying it was intercepted.People give Bill so much credit for that timeout but I think it's one of those rolls of the dice where you're a genius if it works and a the biggest idiot ever if it doesn't.
Like going for the win in SB36, this was a career defining moment by Bill Belichick. This would've made it 4 straight last drive collapses (2006, 2007, 2011, 2014) which would've put a stain on his legacy as a defensive mind. He put a lot of faith in Butler who was getting roasted all week in practice for that play. Arrington was supposed to be the guy, but he was playing so poorly that Bill had to bench him. Had Butler been a step slow and the Seahawks scored, the media and fans would've nuked BB. And I don't see how Tom comes back after that. You see the look of defeat on face after the Kearse catch and tells a teammate something along the lines of "I can't believe this is happening again".That's easy to say watching at home. You watch him... watching Pete Carroll and Bill's got ice in his veins compared to what he's watching at the other sideline. Then there's another layer of the coaches on the headset asking for the time out and Bill's cool as a cucumber going "yeah I got it.".
Legendary.
The amount of pressure in that moment is mind-blowing, yet Bill simply didn't react. He stayed cool and calculated and handled it.
Carroll's biggest regret is probably trying to prop Wilson up too much. Former players have confirmed that the organization wanted Wilson to be the hero. The crazy thing about it is Butler HAD to pick it off. If he just knocked it down the Seahawks get one more shot and this time they go to Lynch.
